hey guys,
im just wondering what mods can be done to a VK commordore?
im curious as i can get my hands on one for free and was thinking of doing it up in my free time.
im not really a big fan of the Vk's Vl's ect but it was my dads and has been in storage at my pops for a few years now and well theres no sence in letting it rust away.
its in really good condition, body and engine wise, jsut has minor surface rust now, it gets started almost every day to keep it from dying.
So what can be done? shes got a stright 6 202? (i think jsut going by my memory) 5 speed manual and stock as a rock.
ive seen supercharger kits for it but they retail at 3000$ and im not looking at spending that much.
so looking for other options..
engine conversions?
i know the most logical choise would be a VL turbo engine btu wondering what other engines fit?
really jsut looking for any options or recommendations so feel free to give me your 2 cents..
cheers

hey thanks for the reply.. thanks for the idea about the interior and front end, will have to look into that.
yeah an rb30 out of a Vl seems like the easiest option, but im jsut thinking of doing something different,
also more quetions, what can be done in the way of break and suspention upgrades?
thanks again guys

202's are tough engine's but are hated by most people. Upgrade your carby/manifold with a Holley of if youve got money to spend some S.U's,Yella terra head,As for a cam, crow cams have a good selection.definatly extractors and exhaust.
Ive heard of people getting decent power by boring out their 202's but in the longrun it only makes your engine weaker and i realy wouldnt have a clue on how much this would cost with a new set of pistons ect.

Depends how big your budget is and what you hope to achieve with the commodore...A tidy up and some light engine mods could come in around a grand...engine swaps, unless you can do most yourself (assuming its NOT a straight bolt in,like the RB30) get costly and fast!!

i got a 202 you could buy, its race prepped, brakes you can buy hsv style kits, suspension aint much really just all hd stuff really, if you get a vl cross member you can bolt any rb to it

Well if your havent got alot on money....
number 1 is flush the engine.... these holden motors like to get crappy inside if their not mantained. the first thing to do it lift the tappet cover and see how clean it is inside, if its pretty clean, a new tappit cover gasket and back it goes, then move to number 3....
number 2, if its glunky and looks like black sludge everwhere, put a new gasket on it, and drive it around till it blows up, then find a decent motor...
number 3, dump the oil, new oil (cheap shit oil) and new filter, run the car until its hot, turn it off. drop around a litre (1L) of diesel into the motor, like your putting oil into the motor..
turn the car back on, dont rev it, dont drive it, just let it idle for 2 minutes. turn it off, drain the oil/ diesel mix. new oil and new filter. you will be amazed of the crap that comes out of the motor.
then shes ready to a little upgrade.........................................................................
..............................................................
the easiest way to get the old 3.3 (202 in old money) is air in air out.
your shopping list.....
Xd Falcon webber carb and aircleaner, ($50 from wrecker).
Redline Webber conversion adapter (supercheap $70)
set of extractors to suit Blue Black motor. ($300 new but ebay if your friend $100 or less)
new valve lifters (any car plaace $50)
And a new cam ( $250 crow cam 36502 (mild cam )
so for about $700 youd have a decent motor...
thats it for a cheapy upgrade, way better fuel economy, you dont have to remove the motor to fit the cam, (radiator must come out though)
would make a nice little motor that would have a decent amount of power.
at the very minimum, carb and extractors....
If you actually do this upgrade, im happy to help with advise, or im located just outside of ipswich, and im happy to show you whats needed
------------------------------------------------------
Disclaimer....
no here we go, the Holley Webber battle.....
Many people will say to put a holly on it, Holleys are good for tractors and pot plants....
they probably produce more outright power but they are not as smooth as a webber, and they have no fuel economy, a webber will give better response, and a smoother acceleration, and way better economy. plus a webber will be happy to bolt onto the varijet manifold with an adapter, where a holley really needs a redine or cain manifold.
I have had ALOT of these engines, i do rebuilds from scratch, and for a CHEAP upgrade on an unopened motor it a good upgrade.

im doing a complete rebuild on my 202 blue, its cost me $1670 for crank shaft grind, flat top pistons, all new bearings, lifters, bore to 60 thou, new mild cam, head service with all new valves.
still gotta get a water pump and a few more things.
should go pretty sweet.
so you think a webber is a better option?
