When good geckos go bad

August 31st, 2009

The Asian house gecko is losing friends
AN INTRODUCED species that has become a favourite in Territory households is about to have its reputation sullied.
The Queensland Museum has taken the first step in a campaign to change public opinion about what many regard as one of the cutest creatures in our back yards.
An unknown number of Asian house geckos, possibly millions, have made homes across the NT since being accidentally introduced in the past 20 years, probably through imported cargo shipments.
Scientists say that despite the house gecko's admired ability to eat pests such as cockroaches and redback spiders, it too is an invasive feral pest.
Museum researchers have launched an Australian-first study of the geckos' habits and population in a bid to change community attitudes and assess their numbers.
The online survey opens with the ominous warning: "Asian house geckos may be spreading and they may be a growing problem for our own native geckos, but at the moment, we just don't know."
Questions in the survey are aimed at gauging the depth of love Aussies have for the little critters.
