This section seems way overdue for this.

With everyone throwing around information in this section, it would be nice to know who has experience in health/fitness/dieting/training whatever, formal qualifications or not.

Or if your just here for the advice and are currently working towards a specific goal and are looking to learn say so.

I am (and others i'm sure) are just curious to know how we all came to be here.

edit: I'll just start with myself and try to keep it brief.

No formal qualifications, however I have, off my own back, studied and put into practice many various forms of training and helped a few people out with diet advice with pretty good results.

Queensland scorpions Rep team U18 (AFL)
Thai boxing for 5 years (trained/fought and instructed a few classes)
Did triathlon for 2 years, wasn't really for me.
Currently training to try and join the QFRS (Strength training as well as fitness training)

Then there's all the other generic sports like AFL/basketball/rugby/tennis e.t.c I play or have played at club level or higher.

Received alot of help from top level coaches/ psycologists and trainers and I still have most of it documented or reserved to memmory.

edit: I've actually considered going back to uni to study biomechanics/sports physiology or something similar, assuming I can't get into the QFRS by the end of the year.

And, go.
the_random_hero
No formal training so to speak, but a lot of absorbed knowledge from my mum who is a nutritionist. About 8 years of indoor/outdoor soccer and a couple of years of various other sports (cricket, etc), currently training in muay thai.

edit: well i notice others are telling height n weight so..... 198cm and 112kg as of yesterday morning.
Imp
Well I have always been skinny all my life, not per se tall but just skinny until grade 9/10 where I went from 160cm to 196cm in less than a year, so I'm just a pure ectomorph.

I did breakdancing for 6 years up until my growth spurt where I couldn't do it anymore due to height problems sad.gif

Finished school and drank myself into a slum, up until some time last year around this time I didn't do anything AT ALL.
My older brother who used to be a bodybuilder saw my dusty weights that I never used, for once in our lives we got talking without arguing and since that one hour long discussion between each other he's inspired me greatly.

I wouldn't ever wear singlets before I started cos I hated myself and my own body and was always largely self conscious. I am always reading up constantly everyday about muscles, exercises, diets, all which could help me. People say "oh but you haven't put on that much" ect but what they don't realise is that it is so so much harder for a taller person to put on quality size compared to an average person. Actually I just bought a book 2 days ago "Strength Training Anatomy" I definitely recommend it for anybody interested in exercises and muscles. Funny enough I know more about exercises, routines, diets more than the personal trainers at my gym and more than the people wanting to become personal trainers at tafe.

I don't care what any of my friends think but I have an inspiration wall with countless pictures and quotes of all bodybuilders that I idolize, the pictures and quotes go all the way up to the ceiling.

I posted some pictures up of myself before I started in my training journal if you want to go check that out. smile.gif

I now go to gym 6 days a week (4 day split) and am currently training for the gridiron team I will be soon joining.
synesthesia
I'm 180cm and 79kg.

Up until the start of this year I was smoking an ounce of pot mixed with a pack of cigs each week. I quit that and ended up becoming an excessive drinker instead, drinking a 6 pack or more every night. Up to that point I'd been slim-ish on a large frame but more soft than lean. The drinking put a small gut on me and I decided it was time to mend my ways.

I'd also had a workplace injury that damaged a lot of the muscle in my upper and lower back and put strain on my T8-T10 vertebrae. I was rehabilitated from the injury but never regained my previous upper body strength and have been relying on a lot of lower body strength to lift heavy weights at work. I was getting a lot of nerve twinges in my back from lifting and movement as well as interupted sleep.

Been going to the gym for about 3 months now. Have started to lean out a bit and restore the muscle in my back and upper body, no longer experiencing bad twinges in my nerves. My goal, like everyone is to build a hard, lean body with visible definition of the chest and abs as well as large muscles on my limbs that suit a frame like mine. I'm also a huge fan of mixed martial arts and I want to acheive a level of strength and fitness by the end of the year where I can feel confident in joining an MMA dojo and train seriously in both striking and grappling.

Good too see you guys are concentrating on your health goals such as your weight and smoking and drinking, these are real health issues as we all know.

See clients that come in with a small oxygen bottle over there back to breath, once your lungs are damaged from smoking there's nothing they can do for you. Yarni has the same damaging effect on your lungs.

cheers..

Been lifting on and off for a few years. Started off at about 55kg (yeah im like 165cm sad.gif ), recently started taking it seriously which coincides with having limited amount of friends as I moved to Melbourne for work purposes.

Trained with a few semi-pro lifters in Brisbane before moving to Melbourne, learned a lot about not only lifting but diet and rest. Currently weigh 72-73kg, still with relatively low bf%. Currently aiming to hit 80kg, before cutting down.

Having a science (and now med) background also seems to help me, mainly in terms of supplements.
omwtfbbq
No formal training, everything i know I've learned of army PT's, I've picked out a few who seem to know their shit.
180cm, 84kg, Currently training for SFET with the help of the PT's and a few SF guys on base when they have the time.
Before the army i was just a cardio monster, didn't bother with weights.

Training here is a frustrating thing, I'll start getting some results then get sent out bush on an ex for 3-4 weeks, live off rat packs and lose all my progress. But that just ads a challenge.

Open to new idea's and advice thumbsup.gif

I am new to the gym world.

Ive heard mixed stories about weights training daily.

1. After weights training (Regardless of muscle), allow the next day to recover.

2. You can train with weights daily but only if you are working out different muscles?
synesthesia
You generally want to give a muscle group a days recovery after training it hard. If you train, for example, arms and chest one day, you could train legs the next while resting your arms and chest.

I'm sure B Unit can weigh in a more professional opinion on optimal recovery times etc.

Currently playing club rugby here and International rugby in Asia. Trained under a variety of coaches with rugby, an exercise physiologist and was taught to lift by an Australian weightlifter and accredited coach (http://www.qwa.org/qwaclubs/honeybadgers/default.asp). 6 weeks from finishing my degree in Psychology hence why I havent been on the forums in a while. Need any relaxation techniques or mental focus stuff, give us a PM.

Everyone is different. More experienced athletes are more than capable of constant training, but they tend to use things like periodization to prevent themselves from burning out.
Once you get used to training, you will find you recover much faster. But take note that your body makes it's changes during rest time, not whilst actually training. If you train too much, you actually prevent your body from adapting, this is where overtraining comes in.

I should probably stop hijacking this thread now.

weightlifters train roughly 15-18 times a week
bmxdirtjumpa
Hey guys, I'm Conrad. My whole life I've been the small skinny guy and well...still am. I'm 58kg's and 175cm tall. When i was a bit younger I did a fair bit of sport, mainly afl then started doing a mixed martial arts style called meyoshin ryu for several years and I was very very fit. Food wise I've always eaten a shitload, eating more than most of my friends/family and its still that way. The sad thing was a lot of this food was just crap (maccas etc). I had a job at dominos for a while so I ate a shitload of pizza aswell, plus cold rock(was next door) and crap from nightowl, lost my job and ended up eating crap for 2/3 meals and often skipping brekky.

I'm now working as a plasterer (fibrous) for about a year and have gained strength but not size and have just started a new diet which involves...well A LOT of eating and I have cut all the crap. I'm gonna start working out around the house first doing pull ups and push ups etc to start off and if I can commit to that I'll sign up to the gym.

I've done a lot of research and learnt a fair bit at school about training etc so I've got an understanding of the majority of it all buut I still have question and still require more information (give me mooaaarrr!!!). So quick question, I'm sure you all are aware of the benefits of eating egg but I'm am very anti-egg. Is there a way you guys eradicate the horrid taste or something that can be used as a replacement?

Thanks guys can't wait till this section really gets going.

But I assume they wouldn't do exactly the same thing every session, or do they?. I know professional footy players that train up to 12 times a week or more, but it's split into weights, technique and fitness sessions to prevent the players from burning out before a game. I know that powerlifting and footy are on completly different ends of the spectrum though.

GreekWarrior
they might spilt but how many different muscle groups do you think they train? they'd still be using there posterior train for all they're exercises

they dont exactly do bicep curls and tricep pull downs, they'd be cleaning, squatting, dead lifting and jerking, with variation of all these in between

Yeah true. There is a chick at my gym who is a power lifter. She does a fair few different exercises on the barbell and does alot of stretching in between sets/exercises.

Aight lets keep this going.

My names Jason, I'm 20. Before I started lifting and gaining weight I was flimsy and weak at a mere 60kg, I'm now 68.5 (still weak just ain't flimsy tongue.gif) standing at 180cm tall. It's amazing how your body transforms when you threat it the right way with a good diet and exercise regime. I've come a long way since one year ago, and I hope to reach my goals of 70kg, then hopefully 75, then we'll see how it goes from then on.

What motivates me to keep lifting was because I was the skinny tall guy, that no one took seriously. I want to show them people how they were so wrong about me, having a physique they'd die for would just be too much win. I also lift for the pump and rush of lifting heavy weights, I dunno it just makes me feel good. Also being Asian, people think we're weak and soft, I am one Asian trying to stop that stereotype, and prove all of them wrong.

I've always wanted to be strong and fit, but just never had the motivation to do it. When I started one year ago I didn't think I would last a month but hey I'm still going surprisingly. One of the reasons why I carry around this quote... "Every accomplishment starts with the decision to try." Yes I know corny but its powerful, at least to me anyway. It effects every aspect of life, not just fitness.

Anyways enough of my blabbering, I'm here to learn about car mechanics etc. Conveniently this section popped up, so its win win.

flalynda
