Full Version: Protein Snack For Night?

is it okay to take this http://www.horleys.com/ViewProduct.aspx?id=44 at night for a night time snack instead of munching on high carb foods etc.... just got nothing else in my cupboard at the moment angry.gif

PS i use this as my after workout supplement!!! and also do i use the 3 scoops as advised or 1 or 2?

If you have no real food in the house, then you can. Use the three scoops.

Protein powders tend to release the protein too quickly into the system to be decent for a pre-bed snack. In saying that there are worse things you could be having. Use it as a last resort.

You can buy those special slow-release formulas (casein) but I haven't had any experience with them and have been told several times they are just crap. Hopefully someone else here has any info on these, I could very well be wrong about them.

^^What was said above is completely accurate. Anything that contains whey protein isolates will tend to be digested in 1-2 hours; obviously not suitable for a pre-bed supplement. Add to that the price of horleys products, you'd get more bang for your buck if you keep using it for post workout recovery. I've done casein by optimum nutrition (http://www.supplementcentral.com/images/products/ON-CAS4.jpg) Which is specifically designed for the purpose, it helps but nothing more so than a hand full of almonds, a tablespoon of peanut butter and a nice glass of eggwhites.

That would be first time i've heard caesin is shit, caesin is a great way to keep protein in your system while sleeping.

I'm sure b unit will comment and also mention other ways to do the same thing. I'm just bit dumb at moment, just had big meal and can't think.. ahah

Should have made myself clear haha. Casein performs the task it is designed for very well, takes 4-6 hours to release, as opposed to the 2-3 hours for whey. As it is a supplement, the same effect can be replicated with a proper balance of natural foods. As for people saying various supplements are shit, it really depends on a few factors. But at the end of the day it's only there to 'supplement', if your diet is poor for starters don't expect to see much.

By all means, proper food should be taken more than supplementing.

Never really understood why people take so many scoops of protein, based on our absorption rate it's absolutely useless.

I read in some fitness magazine section that mixing natural peanut butter into a shake at night helps as not only is it a second source of protein but the fats in the natural peanut butter slow down the absorption rate of whey protein concentrate.

can you get natural peanut butter from woolies?

I tend to make my caesin shake so thick i have to eat it with a spoon. haah

Will also be waiting for his input, It's hard to figure out who is right and wrong sometimes without actually trying something yourself.

Casein is very good as a slow release protein at bed time. If you don't want to buy it in protein shake form, eat low fat cottage cheese. Liver is also another good slow release protein, which you can supplement in tablet form. Liver also has tryptophan which helps promote restful sleep.

Nothing wrong with having a small serving of chicken (enough for 15g of protein) with some low fat cottage cheese (enough for 15g of protein) with a small handful of almonds before bed. Will give you some medium and slow release proteins along with some good fats.

As with all meals, add fibre for even slower release, metamucil etc.

Hey Damo, you can usually find Sanitarium natural peanut butter in the health food section of Coles and Woolies. They keep it in there apart from the regular Sanitarium peanut butter and all the other brands in the spreads & jams aisle.
