150 BAD
Me and a mate were on our way back from the coast and stopped to help a fella that had sparks comin off his boat trailer. we all had headlights on and hazards and were as far off the road as possible. About 5 seconds after we got outta the cars another sideswiped mine and hit the back of my mates car pushing it up into the boat trailer. The little excel lost a wheel with suspenion still firmly attached and the gearbox come outta it too. I spent the next 10 days in hospital and also 3 months off work witha fractured spine. My mates R-spec typhoon is written off, the quote came to 37 thousand and 10 weeks to fix. My ute cost 2 grand and I should pick it up tomorrow.

Basically- you buy a "high-visibility safety vest" - cost is usually $4.50 - $20. Try Hot Dollar shops etc. Wearing one, and it is mandatory in all cars to have and wear in Europe, can mean the difference in 'being seen' when on scene, and not.

Place a hazard-warning triangle 200metres *before* the breakdown or crash scene - to the edge of the roadway. Place only if it is safe to do so.

The 200 meter measure gives greater response time for the dreary and dull to take extra caution. A dozy driver falling asleep, IF running it over is usually awoken by the noise the triangle makes.

Hazard warning lights are the basic 'first instinct' action you take, (and always switch OFF the ignition of crashed cars) and you guys did all that on your evidence. Good!

The triangle is LOUDER to approaching traffic day and night, if you follow.

NSW RTA are updating Australian Road Rules in regards existing hazard-warning triangle placement, to take into account speeds over 80km/h and dual carriageways (for heavy vehicles), hence why I am saying 200metres, a la EU.

thanks for posting, helps motivate things.

we wouldnt have had time to put out triangles even if we had them it was all pretty much as soon as we stopped, i got outta my car and walked to the front of the car that was in front of mine and thats when we got hit. Im pretty sure the guy that hit us was drunk or on drugs or somthing similar because he ran from the scene. Police know who it is tho from fingerprints in the car-he was driving his parents car.

Granted, nothing is failsafe, especially when its 'immediate'. For what its worth, in Germany (motorway & rural roads only) they state you put the safety vest on *before* existing the vehicle, true- so my German counterpart advises - can't imagine all folk being able to do so; tired old bodies n all:-)

Don't not buy the two items however - as you never quite know what you'll experience down the track under different circumstances. Someone might clobber your car and you'll then park to the side under hazards per usual, - the items then throw extra safety your way. Cheap insurance too, a Bunnings Euro triangle $9.90 and safety vest $4.95.

This was a recent incident then, was the pic scanned from a newspaper??

Keep a close eye on your spine long term, I know the pain . . . .

no no pics were from a paper mate. Yeah it is recent, it happened mid july.A mate that was involved took the pics after the ambulance took me away.

Also, I know im most instances it would make a great deal of difference to the outcome by displaying safety triangles and wearing vests and stuff but I honestly believe that would not have made a difference to this accident.

I have my money on the driver being asleep or some kind of drug *im not into them I dont know what does what*. I say this because he jumped out of the car straight away and seemed very alert at what was happening. Maybe he was asleep at the wheel and woke up when the accident happened or as I said on a certain type of drug that inhibited his vision somewhat.

As far as im aware the police are no closer to catching up with him. They told me they've rung his mother a few times and she hasnt answered the phone. Sounds like they've made a hell of an effort doesnt it.

You'd know by now a similar event a day or so ago in SE QLD on the Sunshine motorway that killed a couple that were called by their daughter who's car had broken-down.

Yep, another similar event, highlights the dangers of rear impact regardless of contributing factors; NSW F3 northbound, Friday, 28 August 2009, a current live event (Video):-

More on this:-
QUOTE
The F3 remained closed to northbound traffic at Mount White today following a fatal crash about 10.50pm yesterday, in which a young Central Coast family of three was killed.

They have been identified only as a man, 32, his parter, 27, and their five-month-old baby.

Cars are being diverted to the Pacific Highway via the Mount White off-ramp but delays of up to three hours are being experienced.

Crash Investigation Unit commander Senior Sergeant Peter Jenkins said the freeway would be opened as soon as possible but it was currently being investigated as a crime scene.

He said two vehicles had been stationery in the left lane when a third car approaching from the rear swerved to avoid them but ended up in the breakdown lane, hitting the guard rail.

A following semi-trailer was not able to avoid the two stationery cars and ploughed into the rear vehicle, an Outlander 4WD containing the family.

The Outlandeer was rammed into the rear of the front vehicle, a red Hyundai, with one person inside.

The semi trailer jack-knifed across all three lanes of the freeway and burst into flames.

The three people in the Outlander were declared dead at the scene and their names have not yet been released.

Senior Sgt Jenkins said they were believed to live on the Central Coast.

The driver of the Hyundai is in intensive care at Gosford hospital.

Police are waiting to interview him, the driver of the car which swerved to avoid the two cars and the semi-trailer driver, who was treated for minor injuries and released from hospital this morning.

“It is a horrific incident,” Senior Sgt Jenkins said.

“Three young people, one of them an infant, have lost their lives.

“At this stage we have no indication of why the two vehicles were stationery - we believe they were not travelling together.

“A full mechanical investigation may produce more details, as may interviews with witnesses.”

Senior Sgt Jenkins said any driver experiencing mechanical difficulties on a freeway should pull as far left as possible, preferrably into a breakdown lane or emergency bay.

He urged any witnesses to last night’s fatality to conatct Gosford police.

* A video (SkyNews) shows red Hyundai, the lead vehicle, with its headlights on and hazards-warning lights flashing. Why it was in the left-traffic lane stopped, as opposed to the left emergency shoulder is one question.

And another, Sydney's M7 - August 27, 2009.
http://www.smh.com.au/national/pileup-on-f...90827-f015.html
QUOTE
Commuters were delayed on the M7 after a fatal crash at Horsley Park.

A late model Ford Mondeo ploughed into the back of a parked, fully-laden truck about 5am, police said.

The truck was stopped in a designated parking bay and the driver was sleeping. He woke when the car hit the rear.

The male driver of the Ford was killed. The truck driver and other passing motorists called police.

This link to LS1 forum, highlights the need for safety vests and for a hazard-warning triangle requirement in cars.

See both page one and two, each event example outcome, - could have applied to OP's situation.

Don't take your eyes off closing traffic when attending to urgent traffic duty while awaiting emergency services.

Buy a UNECE R27 Spec hazard-warning triangle for your vehicle for use at crash scenes (to prevent secondary) and breakdowns. SUPPLIERS - via "auto-parts retailers"; I suggest HELLA Part No 2901 or; PRO-KIT Item No. RG9212, $21. From; BUNNINGS stores nationwide - Code 14 580, $9.90.
