I build computers and fix peoples as a side business.

The best thing to do is to just go with a dell. You could build one for slightly cheaper but once you factor in the warranty and support dell now provides its the best option.

DO NOT! get a computer from Harvey Norman because they are stupidly expensive, just phone or internet order a new box from dell.

You could upgrade specific components but in the end there would still be bottlenecks everywhere and you will end up replacing the entire guts of the thing anyway.

It used to be "You go with Dell you go to hell" Not anymore.

What the hell are you on about? Anybody who actually knows anything about computers wouldn't go NEAR a Dell. Best ever computer deal I've got was from DSE, mum got an awesome deal on a notebook from Harvey Norman that was much cheaper than anybody else was willing to do it for.

If you want some unbiased advice, shoot us a PM and I'll be able to give you a couple of pointers plus a good idea of what you need doing first.

I like Dell.

For "Joe Average" they provide a great way to buy a PC. Components guaranteed to work together, warranty that fucking rocks (srsly, you ring them up and they turn up the next day to your HOUSE to swap shit over) and a super simple ordering system - point and click that shit.

For laptops, maybe not so much.

But for desktops, I would also highly recommend a Dell for a Joe Average consumer who doesnt give a shit about Antec powersupplies, Thermaltake cases, Gigabyte motherboards, etc.

I can see how they could be passable for old people or the like who are willing to trade value for convenience, but I still believe they are a waste of money. Harvey Norman/DSE/etc will always be willing to drop the price a little or do some sort of deal, if you're looking for convenience go there.

Mate, what experience do you have in the matter? "ER MY MUM BOUGHT ME A LAPTOP FROM DICK SMIF LOL"

I build custom computers for people as a side-job and let me tell you. Dells are a good deal because they provide awesome support and are only like a couple of hundred more then if I custom build the entire thing.

Next time think before you post.

I would happily put a Dell system against any other pre-built system by the various retail outlets, and I can almost guarantee the Dell systems will come out on top just in 'bang for buck'. I can DEFINATELY guarantee they will come out on top once you factor in support.

While Dell systems are entirely unsuitable for prosumers / enthusiasts due to their fairly limited upgrade paths (though since they just use OEM parts from people like Intel and Western Digital theres really no reason why they cant be upgraded aside from the Dell-spec lock down of the Intel motherboards) they are pretty much spot on perfect for anyone else.

If you were arguing that a custom built PC from a random nerd store was better value then a Dell I'd agree with you (support aside), but theres no way I'm gonna play that game if youre comparing to retail outlets like Harvey Norman and Dick Smith. They are terribad for value for money!

I usually get all my gear from Umart.com.au they r an online store but you can pick up from milton. Gamedude.com.au is good too.

Dells are decent PCs, pretty reliable, even though I hate dell, but thats just me.

Custom computers are best in my eyes though, but if you have no clue about computers and their technical issues, your better off buying a dell, with their help and support/warranty.
BrockSSeacer
umart has a better website than msy imo. prices are great at umart, better than most small computer stores.

I bought and built all my computers through computer alliance in mt gravatt.

Customer service is tops and if anything needs replacing they act on it straight away.

I had to post my ram back down after it kept BSOD on me and it was only a 5 day turn aound.

If you just want a run of the mill computer DELL would be your best option, Harvey Norman and all
those electronic shops are waaaaay over priced for the specs you pay for...

This!

Dell computers are a fucking pain in the ass.

I work doing IT support and doing computer repairs.

Branded PC's most of the time are a pain in the ass.

Just make one up yourself.

I work in support and use Dell (supporting around 650 workstations using Dell hardware, including servers)

Their support arrangement rocks and their parts are guarenteed to work properly or replaced!

People who hate on Dell are like people who hate on Microsoft.. there are things worthy of hating on them for but just to say "Never use Dell" is narrow minded and ignorant.

PS do I run Dell at home? yes on my laptop, no on my desktop and that's only because I built my own machine for gaming etc
