OK so i have XP currently on my PC. I have a CD key for Vista and i would like to upgrade to this. How ever i dont have the install CD for it.

The CD key i have for Vista is a genuine copy, as i have that sticker that you put on the side of your case. Long story short, tower was bought 2nd hand, CD was meant to come at a later date when person found it. I never got the CD.
Chris
Torrents, look for one without botnets.

Or just go straight to Win7 RTM.
GTRwilson
what the shit is a botnet haha. Find me one and ill say thanks? tongue.gif
Chris
Wow, i didnt realize how hard it is to find a 64bit Vista torrent. I should've got it instead of the 32bit when technet was releasing all its shit.

Sorry for my ignorance, but what exactly is Windows 7? Is it like an upgrade on Vista or a complete overhaul a.k.a totally new OS? Would my Vista key work for that, or is it possible to get a copy of x64 Vista some other way as id prefer that if possible.

p.s. Would my Vista CD key be restricted to only working with one specific Vista(e.g. only x32 or only x64) or is that part irrelevant?

Windows 7 is a revamp of Vista, its supposedly uses less resources but uses all of Vista's software and hardware straight away.
It hasn't been released yet, but there is a RTM (Release to Manufacturer) available via torrents, like the one i linked you before.
It looks a bit sexier in the process as well. Check the wiki link, if you are uncertain or need minimum specs.

Use this to activate it.

Or you could borrow a Vista CD off a friend.
GTRwilson
Ideally i would just like to borrow a CD off someone, but i dont know anyone with it. sad.gif

Will keep that in mind however if i get sick of looking for a CD.
Chris
That mainly because no one buys OS's.
DataCabbitKSW
Chris, have you seen the release that Microsoft has already put out? A number of the activation licenses and WGA avoidance methods have already been noticed and number of them have already been closed off. Plus most everyone _does_ buy their OS, just it is built into the price of their machine when they purchase their machine. There are also lots who buy retail copies or upgrade versions.
For those who want to try Windows 7, they are giving out free licenses for the Release Candidate still (until the 20th of August). You can get it over from Microsoft off of TechNet: http://tinyurl.com/9agzvs . That will get you the license key, and the link to download the DVD .ISO file so you can burn it yourself. No need to torrent. Direct download.

Is it possible to get another install CD off Windows, if i provide my genuine CD key?

So is that a full version of Windows 7, capable of doing everything like any other OS? Or is that like a trial version with limited capabilities? Excuse my shitness at this. tongue.gif

OK so i tried that and i got a problem. Firstly the thing is just over 3GB so i couldnt fit it on a CD. So i got one of those virtual CD drive programs and tried to run it. Only im met with the following error message:

This installation disc isn't compatible with your version of Windows. To upgrade, you need the correct installation disc. For more information, check your computer's system information. To install a new copy of Windows, restart (boot) your computer using the installation disc, and then select custom (advanced).
aussieautos
I don't think you can upgrade to Windows 7 from XP, as far as I know you need to have Vista.

You will need to burn it to disc (if possible) and install it from the boot menu.
