Feel like posting up what tyres you run? And ratings on grip, lastability, and how much bloody SMOKE they put out?
.
As stated, i run a 225/45 on 16" rims. Need something that smokes! I get to about 4000rpm in second gear typically, so they are spinning at decent speed, but i cant get any tyre smoke, which i find a bit disappointing... Maybe its not a big thing to some, but i think its a much more impressive drift if theres smoke pissing out. Off the tyres, of course.
Any recommendations?
Car is an R31, RB30E 5 speed, basic mods.
.
Thanks in advance!

don't get so worked up about not makeing any smoke. produceing heaps of smoke does'nt make you a good drifter nor do you get judged on how much smoke you make. it just looks cool for all your groupies.
GTRVspec95
4000rpm is not enough RPM in an RB30 and it just isn't going to turn the tyres as hard as the turbocharged cars

Run 225/50r16's way way cheaper size.
02JZE
or 215/60r16's cheaper again .

I run 205/50 R16's

ermm thats exactly what i said... im pretty sure i said that the only reason im asking for smokier tyres is that it looks better... but thanks for clearing that up in case there was any confusion.
As far as tyre size goes im going to start running a 205/50, bit less width but also a bit less sidewall height than a 225/50. It gets a bit of flex in the sidewall atm, especially up front, so i want to cancel out a bit of that height.
What sort of pressure rating would you run, also?

yeah i know this - it could definitely do with a bit more pushing power but oh well its not somehting i can throw a huge amount of cash at.

like i said i run 32-36PSI in the front and 45PSI in the rear

yeah well thats what got me thinking. I was running about 30PSI in my rears and 36 in the fronts (purely because i had to do a quick rear tyre swap due to lack of tread) but normally run 36 in front and rears. i guess it will differe depending on your tyre profile and such, but would you typically run a higher pressure than you do on the street? i dont want to run to high a pressure, as it makes it harder to get traction, and you lose the forward push, all youre doing is sliding loosely.
Robby
36 is too much for front i reckon!!!

i run 26 in the front (they r federal rsr semi slicks but)

also if u want smoky rubber... hunt something with LOW tread wear ratings.... but in saying that, the softer and smokier, the grippier they are
lil_bobby_260
dude... RB30E - grip is my enemy...
so realistically - just run whatever on the back? as far as brand goes etc?
I had to pump the fronts up cos they were really rolling under, heaps of sidewall flex, to the point where you can see wear from the track, up the outer sidewall of the tyres from it tucking under hard steering.
Dumb questions, but theres a lot im still trying to figure out - see if theres any tricks up sleeves or easier ways of doing things etc. Can spend heaps on suspension and setup etc but its still the tyres the keep the car to the road.

i just bought a set of standard 16" r33 stockies for my 32 and they have nexen N2000 225/50/16 and they produce a fair bit of smoke in second gear drifts and they dnt seem to have a hell of alot of grip, the tires were brand new on the stockies, but when im running my 17's i can only chirp second but with these on im gettin the ass to snake all the way up the street
ih8wrx
they dnt seem to rip big chunks out of the tire either when sliding

A decrease in unsprung weight will do wonders for a car.

OP.

You will find it tough to blaze up tyres with the amount of power you are making. I know it's not what you want to hear but the real smokey smokey doesn't begin until the top of third gear...
lil_bobby_260
Bummer. Top of third gear? I can get it to pretty high in 2nd gear sometimes but it aint easy.
Might just focus on practising technique until i do a 25DET conversion or pick up a second hand VLT setup.
Cheers.

RB30 turbo manifold and an Ebay turbo setup would be all you need.

Yeah well the car only gets driven for about 2-3 hrs a week, and even then it spends 90% of its time idling at the starting grid so i guess ebay is an option - not like its going to do a lot of KM's.

my 205/45-16 @ 45psi make some good smoke there a hard compound tyers
lil_bobby_260
yeah i need a higher sidewall than that tho - being an R31. Im thinking 205/50/16 is gonna be a winner.
