My internet keeps dropping out. I'll be browsing the forums and external links will stop working. I can still browse the forum i'm in for a little bit, but eventually that drops out too.

Is anyone else having problems with dropouts? Particularly in the northern suburbs. Trying to work out if it is the modem or the provider.

If anyone wants to tell me that telstra is rubbish or anything like that, tell me in the random thread please.
Zmit
mine has been dropping out a little....

then we checked the exchange box.
pics are on facebook.

i'm with internode though.

a few things.

1. check that it IS the modem connection not the NETWORK connection (network cable or wireless)
- do this by logging on to the modem and seeing if it has an IP address.

2. check the inline filters on the phone line. ours dropped out during phone calls, we worked out one of the filters had failed.

3. check the exchange box...... err.... ours was packed full of ants that had eaten the insulation...
vh-holden
any suggestions on how to check the filters without buying new ones?
Zmit
uh..... i guess the way we found out was through the phone calls.
it was confirmed on quite a few occasions that the interference from the phone calls was forcing the loss of the connection.

so i guess check if its the phone/other devices on your phone lines first.
spyder6052
unplug it and plug the phoneline directly into your modem, if its fixed you got a fuxord filter
Daniel180
what tim said. also what sort of modem do you have? old school black one or new telstra one?
SIKUNIT
Must be the provider.

Mum's has been fucking up of late, they sent out a new modem , wasnt that, then spent 3 hours on the phone trying to fix it, got it working then as soon as she hung up the phone it stopped again.

Gaybar telstra shit.
vh-holden
the modem is a dlink adsl modem with the router and wireless network thingy in it.
Enrage
Having the same prob.. with telstra too. Random drop outs n drop out while on the phone. f-ing annoying. Transfering to internode soon.
Pure-SX
same problems with internode matey smile.gif

when experiencing drop outs when on the phone its usually always due to filters stuffing up or not having filters in the first place
Darkness
People still use Bigpond?

Telstra internet? why would you.
Cancel your subscription and go with someone else that doesnt use line sharing technology!

Westnet/Internode are the best two companys to have internet with
vh-holden
I've noticed that it freaks out when i'm downloading a torrent, or when i go to google image search. weird.

As far as i am awayre line Sharing technology is where you are sharing ports on the dslam.

As far as telstra goes, there is never ending problems with the company. they charge way too much.

Also Telstra is the ONLY company that provides ADSL and charge for your uploads.
EG: your upload traffic is counted in your monthly "traffic" hence download and upload.
http://www.bigpond.com/internet/plans/adsl/plans-and-offers/ (right down the bottom it says * Usage means monthly combined upload and download data transfer 1 Gigabyte = 1000 Megabytes. Unused usage allowance forfeited each month.)

Telstra dont have gaming servers.
Telstra also charge you for traffic from their own server. internode allow you to download and use their gaming servers free of charge (this meens that it doesnt count to you "download" limit)

So BLWN5L, why would you want to go with telstra if they are going to rip you off so.

I would also like to see anyone on telstra get over 700kbps download rate using telstra ising a standard 1.5mbps connection

I could go on and on, but i cant really see the point, you make up your own mind....

telstra owns all their exchanges and they is a private company, they will have to pay for space if they do so.. unless they is a subsiduary (spelling) of telstra?

they prob have to pay but they have right to access them as it is anti competitive otherwise..... trust me i just had an issue with this.... and telstra reserving ppls lines so other isp's can't provide a service on them....!!

yes i have, on many occasions.. telstra is up teh top then company name is apart of teh signing in.. but in saying that if a rival company wanted to put equiptment in teh exchange wouldnt they have to pay telstra for that space, seeing as they need to pay pit & pipe rental then line rental..

So getting back to where this tread started...

Process of elimination.

Before you get started, log in to your modem and note down your current DSL status - 1. Connection speed 2. Line noise margin, up and down.(this should by somewhere between 6 & 12db)

Rather than mucking around changing filters, lines, modems, ect, unplug all additional equipment, just run a phone line to your modem (no filter, it's only for your phone) and LAN cable to your PC, so no routers or additional gear, make sure you unplug all phones, faxes ect, any other items that connect by wireless, mobiles, games consoles and so forth.

Resart your modem and recheck these figures, note any change.

Next, plug in 1 phone, call Bigpond tech support and ask then to do a line test, also tell them the numbers you jotted down earlier and ask if they are in an exceptable range. If all is good at Bigponds end and your line keeps dropping out, ask them to restet your account password.

Reset your modem back to factory default and re-enter you your details, if your modem is bigpond supplied, use your bigpond CD, it will ensure all setting are correct.

If you still have no luck, make sure windows is upto date, do a factory reset on Internet Explorer and a Windows disk clean up.

If still no luck, try to borrow a modem for testing or possibly consider buying a new one.

thank you so much for that!! i'll give it a go sometime this week.
