Police say six people have been injured in an explosion at a safety training centre in Darwin's outer suburbs this afternoon.

St John Ambulance provided treatment at the accident site in Berrimah before taking all of the men, who have suffered burns of varying degrees, to the Royal Darwin Hospital.

It is not yet known what caused the explosion, but an ambulance spokesman said it was a gas explosion and the men had suffered facial burns.

The injured were involved in a workshop being run by IFAP, which bills itself as the North Australian Safety Centre.

The company's managing director, Martin Ralph, said the injured were involved in an advanced firefighting course.

He said their injuries were minimised by the use of protection equipment.

All training programs have been suspended at the centre.

"Our priority is to the welfare of those involved and our focus is on their recovery," he said.

NT WorkSafe is investigating the incident.
