Full Version: What Are They Making The Roads Out Of Near Old Beach?

As per the title - have spoken to 4 ppl who nearly wiped the front out of their cars after or during the rain on the East derwent Highway on Thursday night and Friday morning. WTF are they making the road sout of, that they fall to peices at the first site of some rain ? The peice of road i'm speaking about is near old beach and is pretty much brand new - it now looks like moonscape and has fuggin pot holes the size of small cars in it. I hit a couple of these holes doing 80 and thought i'd left the front of my car behind. Another couple guys thought some arsehats had moved the witches hats away from the work area, leaving the exposed bit to drive on, both had very close near misses - it was arsehats alright - arsehats cheapskates skimping on road maintenance.

I called the Brighton council and they advised - not their issue as the roads are now outsourced. I'm going to put a complaint in, i know wont get me fuckin know where, but 4 people now require wheel alignments at the very least, and still checking out steering arms and wheel dings etc.

Anyone else encounter this crap ??

Yep,my word i did.......belted a pothole real good the other day in the clubsport.....wheel alignment next week.....its a cheaper way of building roads, called coldmix......no where near as good as proper hotmix....but seeing roads are outsourced these days, they need to build them out of this stuff......more repairs=more money from the taxpayer......more money for the company

i have encountered them, but not at old beach, have hit one tonight on 7 mile beach road i think it is, behind the runway. then bro in law hit one on cambridge road tonight (same car) where they just ripped up the road to repair shit. and my step bro hit one on tranmere road, all where they have re sealed, repaired shit. not sure if its the same stuff tho? they r farking hopeless, been thinking of contacting the council but knew that would get us no where.

I know it's cliche' but the more ppl that kick up the better. I'm surprised someone did not get killed near old beach. It was some of the worst road conditions i've ever seen.

Ok - after hunting around, i have a number. If ANYONE has an issue with a road, a repair then you can call 0362338676 and tell them you want to make an official complaint.

It's not just newly laid roads /repairs the same up the midlands and on some roads that have been sealed for years un touched!!!. But what this is actually is nothing to do with the work/workman doing the roads. We have had a Lot of rain lately and the under lying ground was VERY VERY DRY for years and all of a sudden it rains very light for days and soaks in the quite heavy rain then sun for a week then lots & lots more rain it is small sink holes under the roads then heavy traffic weight and presto big ass holes or the road surface completely falling apart. expect a lot more to show up over next few weeks people

I spoke with the supervisor yesterday that was manager of the old beach project. He said there's been issues in heaps and heaps of places, but was nice enough to talk with. I explained that it looked as though i had a bent steering arm and would need a wheel alignment and he explained the insurance process too me. Seems they've had a few claims lately - and are expecting quite a few more from road conditions. The insurance company was pretty good as well - if anyone got any damage, thinks they might have got any damage, needs a wheel alignment or what ever - contact DEIR and find out how you go about being compensated.

Your right, the rain does cause it BUT, this can be avoided in most cases. Problem is they just grade a dirt road and hot mix over it so there is no drainage. It gets wet, cracks, gets more wet and all the traffic then causes these areas to pot hole..

The way they should be doing it (and quite often do in new areas) is dig down 3-400mm and fill it back up with road base(blue metal with cement mixed in basically) with agpipe drainage where appropriate, compact it all and hot mix over it. That way the ground can move under it and the water can flow under it without the water pooling under the hot mix surface.

The other problem is this bloody gas pipeline, who ever from DEIR is signing the work off needs a bullet to the head. Albert RD is a prime example, the hotmix they put back in there after putting the pipe in is fucked and a total embarrasement to the company who did it.... Same goes with Mcqauarie st, they lifted all the manhole lids up 50mm and now they are like speed humps in the middle of the right hand lane. You would have to hope this is only because they are planning to hotmix over the concrete and raised the lids to match the to be new height???

I wonder how many accidents are realistically had thru poor road building, maintained roads...If you hit a huge bump/pot hole/repair and swerve or get thrown off line - the good ole - speed statistic is chalked up to the cause, but realistically - had the road been in reasonable condition, then it wouldn't of happened. I know - lotsa ppl going to say - if you were travelling at a reasonable speed you'd see the issue before hand - but deadset, some of the road repairs around Hobart are a fucking joke and it will only be a matter of time before some ole granny, new driver wipes themselves and others out as a result of the "speed" humps on our national highways...
