Chris!!
Hey guys, i'm looking at upgrading my computer at the moment, how much would something cost that could run Starcraft II and WoW smoothly on max settings? I was gonna go to MSY in Auburn... I already have a case, 22" LCD, Speakers, keyboard, mouse, and headset with microphone... just need the guts of it smile.gif

And what's better for gaming? Dual or Quad core?
sweet_az

Chris
As far as i am aware, you will not notice much difference between a dual and quad core while gaming.

Take a look at this.

Just use this as a reference and mix and match parts. The prices on there may be outdated.

Also, whats a good online shop for computer parts? Best i've found is PC Case Gear.
Chris!!
Hey sweet_az, looks good i was checking it out before, only thing is i'm in south nsw lol.

And yes, its an awesome name, good to know i'm not my only #1 fan!! tongue.gif

yes go for the I7 if you got the $$$ to spend smile.gif I would!. however if you're on a budget go for the Phenom II, there is no considerable FPS difference in games between the I7 and Phenom II.

technically the i7's are 8 core
Chris!!
ended up with the 8400, gtx275,gigabyte ep45ud3p, 500gb hd, 4gb ram 2 channels

question - on the motherboard, for the ram theres 2 yellow and 2 red slots, do i put 1 in each colour or one in each red? or yellow? its get a red and a yellow, then a space then another red and a yellow
Mr.B
What model motherboard?
Chris!!
CPU - Intel Q8400 2.66Ghz Core 2 Quad
RAM - G Skill-PQ series CL5 4GB Kit (2x2GB) DDR2 800
Graphics - Inno3D PCI-E 896MB GTX 275
HD - Hitachi 3.5" 500GB HDD
Burner - Pioneer SATA 217BK OEM DVD RW (1 Yr Warranty)
Case - Coolermaster Centurion 05 with PSU
Keyboard - Logitech G-15 Gaming Keyboard
Mouse - Logitech G5 Laser Mouse
MotherBoard - Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3L
Headset - Logitech Clear Chat Premium Headset

I got all that for about 1200, not too bad?

Spewing because one of the clips on the front USB came out with the Headset when i unplugged it, so to get warranty i'd have to pull it all back out and drive back to sydney, just to make a usb sit in properly.... argh so not worth it

And anyone know about the RAM?
bandit_corolla
you might wanna wait abit intel is bringing out i5 soon

Back in the day, yes you needed to do this. Depending on whether the sticks are matched and dual channel or not, just chuck them in 1st, space, 3rd, space.

If it beeps like a mofo, then take the 3rd out and place it in 2nd.

And also, in regards to the whole dual core gaming thing: Games aren't yet designed to utilise the full potential of multi core processors, as far as I know, they still only utilise the 1st core and completely ignore any others (apart from Crysis maybe). You're probably better off sticking with a medium to high model dual core and upgrading everything again later down the track when the aforementioned does actually happen.

It also depends on what sort of other things you'll be doing on the PC, if you're going to be compiling complex C++ programs, running dual screens, holding a 20GB database, a file server and editing movies all at the same time, go for the quad.
screwball
Speaking 100% objectively after building a lot of computers, Coolermaster cases are rubbish.

Antec are the best quality case.
