Few nights ago my room got a funny smell. Foudn it came from computer a further more found it coming from the PSU and no where else. Replaced that and still doesn't work so went and got a few new things. Heres a the list.
CPU - AMD 7850
MB - GB MA780G-UD3H
HD - Seagate 1TB
PSU - Vantec ion2 620w
RAM - 2g 800mhz from old comp
VIDEO - 256mb gforce7600 form old comp
What i was told is that if i conected the old HD up to the new mb and cpu it will format it self, is that true?
Also how do i hook up my old HD (250gig) and remove the stuff to put on the new HD?
How do i connect both to work at the same time so i can chuck stuff on the old one to store shit?
Cheers,
kit

Plug it all in and go!

For your old hdd, your motherboard has 6 ports for SATA(6 yellow ones in bottom left) unless it's IDE and you still have an IDE.
Just make sure you've set the 2nd harddrive to slave so you don't boot off it.

so both IDE and SATA have XP on them, I hook the IDE up as master and SATA as slave is that correct? then its as simple as copy paste from old to new. Just remebered i can't use old HD anymore as dvdplayer and burner take up the IDE cable.

1) Plug in and boot from your new drive (the one you're keeping) - this one will be the SATA drive.
2) Unplug your IDE devices and plug in your old drive into IDE making sure it's jumpered to slave (not going to be using the dvd/burner during this copy time anyway)
3) Copy the crap you want to keep from the old drive (IDE) over to the new one (SATA - will be your C:\)
4) Unplug the old drive and plug your burner/dvdplayer back in
5) profit?

Its been a while since ive done it, but you might need to go to control panel - administrative tools - computer management - storage - disc management to assign a drive letter if the hard drive isnt showing up.

If it's booting from the SATA, and disk management shows no other drives then either one of two things has happened
1) your drive is toast
2) you've not got power plugged into the IDE drive.
Does it show up in your BIOS or during your POST checks on boot?
Make sure both drives are detected then we can work from there. Make sure you're not just booting from the IDE drive.

its running from sata, i can see it in BIOS and disk management.
it can't be the HDD (praying)never had a problem with it like no blue screens never jammed on me. Seems like the mobo and psu stuffed up and thats it, hoefully it didn't damage the hdd.

Do you see BOTH harddrives in BIOS? if yes, are they both in Disk Management?
If so, then prob just need to do as BozzA said and assign it. If not we have to work out why from there.

No it's best you reformat, you have to do that manually by inserting either your XP or Vista CD/DVD.
3) Copy the crap you want to keep from the old drive (IDE) over to the new one (SATA - will be your C:\)
I suggest using Acronis True Image home and cloning the drive, this will make the new SATA drive bootable. Make sure both drives are "basic" and not "dynamic" you can find out in the device manager

Delete the partition and do a clean install since you are using a new mobo.

wont format it self. if u have a sata drive that has been setup to run then it should just plug in and go... (i believe new mb's always use sata as main drives) as been said before just disconnect the burner and set the IDE drive to slave. should pick it up...
i thought that windows automatically assigned a drive letter to IDE drives cos they dont need setting up. its just SATA drives that need setting up....?

Buy a new hard drive install Vista/Windows and then make it your primary boot in bios. After that when you go on vista you can go retrieve your files in that hard drive.

ok got back from store. What i've found is its got a little error which may have been cause by a spike in power and has created abit of a glitch in the drive. Found that it doesn't have a drive letter and can't be given one.
He said best way is to copy a image of the drive onto another, the fromat the drive and put everything back on, all i need is the program and what not to do it.
So can i copy the data on the 1tb by using whatever the program i need?
Also what program is the best and easiest to use for this type of thing?

If you can't assign a drive letter, then you wont be able to take an image of it..
Only option I'd try is take the sata drive out and try and boot back from the IDE drive.
If you can't boot from it, or assign it a letter, then you're fucked and without pulling the platters out and trying to salvage it (which if you're not very PC savvy, you just wont be able to do).

Acronis True Image.
