Hey guys, just thought I would start a thread specifically about protein powders. Which ones do you use, how often do you take them, and are you seeing results after incorporating them into your diet?
Personally I have been taking Optimum Nutrition for probably the better part of the last ten years. It tastes great, mixes well with water, and is priced pretty well with the large dog food type bags lol. Every now and then I try other brands just to mix it up a bit, but always seem to go back to ON. Currently on Dymatize Elite which is a WPI/WPC combo. Although currently I would be lucky if I having one shake a day, trying to just get more protein from food sources, but some days when you are busy, shakes are a good quick fix.

Horleys Ice (chocolate), taste wicked when mixed with both water and milk. The reason i chose it was because it has such a low carb content but it gives you soo much protein in return. I usually smash one a day

Bodyripped Muscle Milk, probably the best tasting protein available IMHO. Have one in the morning, after gym and one 30mins before bed.

Unsure about your rumours, big call considering they are one of the biggest sellers worldwide. But I would be interested to know your source. I have tried the International Protein myself, was good but didn't seem to sit in my stomach as well as the ON. The best whey proteins come from the states, all Aust and NZ whey proteins come from the one source just with different filler. I used to know the owners of International, very nice people.

I am by no means having a dig at you here, as I know most of these people personally outside of their businesses, but the term 'professional' is a bit much for the owners of supplement shops. I'm talking to one later, I'm sure he will get a laugh out of it. Please don't put them in the same class as my missus, she will have your nuts
Here is the list of ingredients as taken from the side of the bag of my flatmates ON Gold Standard 100% Whey:
Protein blend (whey protein isolate, whey protein concentrate, whey peptides), cocoa (processed with alkali), artificial flavours, lecithin, acesulfame, potassium, Aminogen (registered trademark), lactase.
Allergy information: Contains milk and soy (lecithin) ingredients.
Do you mind me asking which shop gave you your advice? I would just like to know so I can tell you which protein manufacturer they are associated with. They all start rumours about each others products at some point in time. Even tell of laboratory test done, to which no results have ever been shown publicly.

Skim milk powder is a cheap alternative, but not as good. Different foods have a different amino acid profile, whey has a far better one than skim milk powder. Probably not so bad if you are only have maybe one shake a day, and getting plenty of protein from proper food sources.
If you try it, let us know how you go.

Sadly not yet, hopefully some more come in for a look and to contribute. Unfortunately so called womens protein powders are just a marketing ploy to get you to pay more for the product, sorry to tell you. You would be far better off financially purchasing a normal protein powder which will also be of better quality. I strongly recommend Optimum Nutrition.

Well different types of whey proteins are digested at different rates. WPI is absorbed faster than WPC or Calcium Cassienate. WPI is best just before and just after a workout. WPC is a medium speed one, so any time during the day. And Calcium Cassienate is a slow release protein, so best before bed. Overall protein blends are probably your best value for money, unless you are buying a product such as Horleys Ice which is ideal as a WPI pre/post workout.
Ideally the more protein you can get from real food sources, meats, chickens, eggs, etc the better. Protein powders should only be used as an on the go type of meal replacement. You will get far better muscle gains/fat loss from real food as it will stimulate your metabolism far more than a protein powder, and without all the lactose. Avoid soy proteins though, they are being found to be quite harmful to males.

Damo I tried one of the Reflex protein powders a few years back, but can't remember which one. It was similar to ON Whey, approx 80% protein, low fat, low carb, mixed well, flavour was pretty good etc. It also contained colostrum, which is really good for the bacteria in your gut. May have been about 4 years ago now, my salesmate rep for the company was supplying it to the Broncos at the time. I think it was slightly more expensive than the ON. Reflex do make some good products in general.

Your best bet would be Optimum Nutrition The Whey. It's about 80% protein with a blend of WPC and WPI, so it has fast acting and medium acting proteins along with digestive enzymes to help your body absorb it. Try to get as much protein as you can from real food sources though, chicken, tuna, eggs, red meat and a little dairy (yoghurt, cottage cheese etc).
Since you are 18 and sounds like you are pretty active, safe to assume that you are fairly lean and just want to put some size on. I suggest making sure you are getting plenty of good quality complex carbs such as sweet potato and basmati rice into your diet. Also some essential fats with every meal to help boost your calorie intake, plus they are great for good health in general, such as almonds, flaxseed oil, avocado, grape seed oil, olive oil, fish oil etc.
Don't eat too much in one sitting, spread your meals across 5-6 a day each similar in serving and calorie size, and drink shit loads of water. Avoid alcohol and get plenty of sleep.

The Protein Direct WPC seems to be working well for me and I'm seeing results.
I've only just started training seriously and had a poor level of fitness previously so I'd expect to see some significant results regardless but I have no complaints about it for the cheap price at this stage. 5kg for under $130 is a bargain.
I have heamachromatosis so I find it hard to eat a lot of red meat to increase my protein intake, taking a protein powder has definetely helped me.
