Looking to buy GQ Nissan Patrol and fit it with an RB26 engine

Question im asking is ...

Has it been done before ?
Is it a direct bolt on to the GQ gearbox ?
Do the engine mounts need modifying ?
Can the GQ gearbox and diffs handle the power of stock RB26 ?

any feedback or referal to someone who has done the conversion is much appreciated

Thanks
Brett

rb30 and rb26 had the same bolt pattern

shouldn't but you'd want to replace them anyway
from 80kw~ to 200+kw on decades old mounts

no, once again its a 100%+ increase in power and you should expect and plan for stuff to break

i dont understand why you would do that the 2.6 liters will struggle with the weight of the patrol untill the turbo cuts in, id turbo the factory engine or put i touquey engine there like a v8
Brett
yeah I would have to agree, 2.6 will struggle off boost when you're doing anything remotely off road
plus its a very expensive option

look at a vh45

Been done, it will blow 2 an 3 gears. I believe the gq runs the same gearbox as the vl turbo.

VH45 is not worth the $, ls series are best for conversions.

Has been done, someone off here has done it in a maroon one, HRASS is the member.

have done a bit of research on this now and still a lot to go but from what i have found the guys in the GU series are running RB25's and not having any problems down low at all .... from the GU's i have seen with RB25's they are insane off road.

Not really interested in turboing a standard engine ... have already been down that road before. A lot cheaper to get a half cut RB25 even and throw that in.

Still researching the gearbox rumours .... have been told the GQ are one of the stronger 4wds around ... having said that have found built gearbox's for $1600

thanks for the feedback ... keep it coming

Don't get te small shit rb/rd box confused wth the large td/tb box.
DEADZOOK
i say do it. rb26's are load of fun, balls and no shortage of power upgrades.
i have been messing with 4wd's for years and have seen plenty of gq's runnning 500+ hp on stock box and diff's woth no drama's. if you want to be sure then go to gu diffs and box. do it, it would be fun as.

the gearbox is the same gearbox as the vlt, its just got a t-case hanging off the back. We've got a few around here with vlt motors and they will take the punishment, just not as well as the bigger 4.2 TB/TD gearbox.

What gearbox are those lads using in the GU powered RB26? Are you talking about ryans green GU from victoria?

Ive got a tricked up tb42 running over 2hundy at the wheels with bog gearing and 37s and it used to shits more clutchs than anything (i think its had 5 types built buy some big names people). Choose a good clutch, and watch how you drive it, if your on a steep incline and at full boot and going no-where, and you start to feel it slowing down, back off, your clutch will be on the way out.

Only good thing your going to be with a rb26 is the ability to rev it, efi, and loosing a heap of weight out of the front end. If your serious about getting a rb in there, get a det. To me, and in my experiences, i see no point in going a NA motor, as you'll soon work out you'll need the extra power and torque (resale value will be hugely increased). The fuel economy will go down, and it will run a hell of a lot cooler. The GQ front end is prone to snapping cvs if its a SWB and you run a locker, and once you upgrade the cv's you smash the input shaft on the gearbox. GQ's are so cheap these days, you can get a spot on swb for about 3 grand, throw another 5 at it and there weapons.

even better use the rb30 bottom end and put the rb25 head onto that.
Will give much better down low and the 25head will flow and rev alot better. I was thinking about doing this to a gu, but its a bit tricky on my small wallet.

interested to see what you end up going with. Either way will be awsome.

One thing i herd is that 7500rpm screaming up mud hills isnt the way to go. Have you considerd a diesel? But saying that id go to rb over a diesel haha

How about the Nissan RB30DET engine with the RB25DET twin cam head and turbo. Should bolt straight onto the existing gearbox. Seems the RB25DET is not such a common engine but the RB30 is in the GQ.

348Kw and 618Nm!!!!! Overkill??? but a bit less would still be plenty.

Good luck which ever way you go.
