During practice was good to watch, once it hit 3pm looked like event co-ordination failed. I left 30min into the comp

Yeah gotta agree with that.
Great event and very entertaining, just needed more constant action.
Oh and there was no one on the microphone??!! would have been nice to know what was going on. Still had a good time though. well done thumbsup.gif

I pulled up just before 3, and was dissapointed at the amount of action up until 4. It was fairly decent after then for about 30 min though.
But they need to be making launches every 20 - 30 secs, to keep us entertained biggrin.gif
DZ
Yes, have to agree with everyone there sorry.
We dont have access to the tower to be able to use the microphone to keep spectators informed.
And the most annoying problem we had was drivers saying they were going to compete in the comp. and then when we came to call them up for a run they were nowhere to be found. So therefore, we had to spend time hunting around for drivers that were meant to be running.
Next month we are changing the format of the competition to accomodate this and hopefully it'll solve these problems.

Thanks to everyone who came out and we hope you did have a great day.
omp
Yep went down there today and I liked it! Maybe a megaphone would help in rounding up the drivers.

MrDOHC
what time did it go till, we had to leave, i have 500+ photos, and 2 vids of the stang, does someone wanna host them
HSV
was a good day just need to flow through the drivers a little more........ maybe a change in track also? ie sort of like the circuit used for powercruise last year? incorporated the skid pan area after turn 3, turn 5, turn 6 and turn 7........?????

If you can get them to me I'll be happy to put them up on the DriftZone galleries.

The comp. ran til 5. So the action was ripping up well before then.
From 5 til 5:30 we just let people out for some single "play" runs again.
DRF74
have a selection process for the comp. ie. you have to be chosen to compete....
HSV
they do John its called qualifying ie the first round biggrin.gif
D1_Spec
yer we left at about 5:30 and who won?
it was awesome to see the sprinters giving it there best biggrin.gif
and THE 86 (hsv) ur shift light was glowing strong laugh.gif
DZ
We thought that we were prepared to handle 40-ish cars in the competition but we can see now why the numbers are restricted by qualification in other events.
It just seems unfair to knock people out who might have never been out before they even get started.
HSV
thanks man was that on the track or outside you could see the shift light? tongue.gif Beau in the Panda Sprinter won the event i believe.....

Ill think youll find that might of been round one where there was the best of one run to go through to round 2 and 3 in the other format....

As I explained in the drivers briefing before the competition (about 3pm) the first round would be a single run elimination. Having approximately 40 cars in the comp. makes this essential. Otherwise, 40 cars = 20 pairings x 2 runs, equals 40 runs not counting ties that need a 3rd run to decide it.
A lot of other comps. have a qualification session where the field is eliminated down to only 16 cars for the actual competition. More often that not, the crowd is tiny for the qualifications too, so less people get to see you run.

Of course, as we are new to running comps, there will be some teething problems and if anyone has any REASONABLE suggestions they will be taken into account for the next event on the 22nd of August.

Before any of us even left the track last night, we were already discussing ways to make the next event better and how to iron out the bugs. And being a volunteer run club we are always on the lookout for more dedicated helpers.
180GO
Another problem came in the form of a lot of people who had entered and had been practicing from for the first 2 hours deciding to pull out of competing moments before the Comp began. We had previously worked out pairings with all cars, then when a car pulls out it TOTALLY ruins this. In future, there will be no planned pairings and you will run against whoever is either in front of or behind you on the grid. For the first Comp with a field of 30 odd cars, our first approach worked perfectly. With a feild of 40+ cars, it was just too difficult chasing up people who had decided not to run, or were chatting to mates, or over getting a hotdog, can of coke but still waiting on the steakburger from their mate Stevo over at the canteen, or on the phone trying to hook up via SMS.

It was an assumption on my part that everybody who paid for the day would enter the Comp, [I know I would]
So yeah sorry guys, but this is only our second Comp and we are learning as we go.

Geeez Driftdays without Comps were So much easier. I got a lot more driving time too with those which I don't seem to get any more.

PS Sorry about the bushfire as well.
OMS-180
Im spewin I missed it, it sounds like it was a great day... I was really hoping to compete in this but my clutch decided to give way sad.gif So I just stayed on the coast for the day.... and copped a defect fine.... But anyways, I will definately be at the next one for sure biggrin.gif

Can you still drift without a license?? unsure.gif

Hahahah the little Red car had wayyyy to much power, the fella poped his front tires even though it was rear wheel drive. tongue.gif that fella was funny especially seeing him paired with the Shelby Mustang. Those two looked like they had a ball. biggrin.gif

As per earlier said
Need a microphone.
and to have more cars on track smile.gif

Whoaaaaaaa. We only just got authorisation to have 2 cars out on track so we could have battle comps and people are getting bored with it already. blink.gif

Lets stick with 2 drivers at a time at this stage and see what happens over the years as the sport develops in Australia. Also, after some of the runs towards the top of the comp, I dont think my heart could stand any more than two cars dodging it out that close.

Thanks for the input tho'. Keep the ideas coming.
TurbostyleR
It was an ok day out, some of the drivers are pretty good...

the most fun cars in my opinion were the AE86 with the RB25 and that 800hp turbo V8 cobra! - i loved the way he lit up 3rd on the straight, very cool site to see!!!

OMS-180 - sorry to hear about your licence darl, and im sure you can still dorift on da track without a licence...

i might participate in the next one with EAT17....thats if i still have it by then....

Well then, too easy. Make sure you come to the Driftzone/Full Lock HPI Driftnationals round October the 10th and see 6 professional D1 drivers team drifting at QR!!! thumbsup.gif thumbsup.gif
MR_E
Thanks to all those who came.
We have already started talking about the problems that arose due to the competition format and will address the issues before the next Drift day.
We most likely will at 3pm make the lane closest to the fence a comp lane and the far lane open, so that whilst the comp drivers are trying to get ready, e.g.. tires. The open lane can still allow others to get out.

MR_E
We can only get so many cars on the track at one time for 2 reasons, 1. saftey and 2. when one person spins it does not ruin it for those behind.

Yeah was as great day apart from some minor hiccups i thought, but as u guys said ur just getting started and used to things......maybe when the guys register to drift they can tick a box or something saying whether they will be entering the comp or not so u kinda have a rough estimate of numbers..........n like MR E said about the lanes etc.......Good job guys...but yeah a microphone is needed and maybe a basic set of rules for each comp...so like dont change the rules comp to comp ...just a suggestion...... smile.gif

There was a set of rules drafted before the first comp. and we used the same format again this month. The problem was that we had to change the format on the fly when people started pulling out without notifying us.

So I think, considering we had to react to the unforeseen at the time and relayout the entire comp to suit, it all went off pretty smoothly.

Was a great day :-)

I know this has been asked before , But is there a chance of possibly running just practice days with one car passes? (seperate from the drift comp days) - where the whole point of the day is just practice - and spectators dont get charged?

I for one need a lot of practice, and i would be more inclined to race more often if i knew that people werent paying to see me spin out every lap..

- I understand that some people were getting bored with the practice days - but for noob drifters i think they would still be very popular..

thoughts?? comments??

I agree - spinning is what makes you learn the limits and get better.

BUT - it also slows the day down and spectators dont want to see a bunch of newbs spinning every lap.
