...cancel each other out.

You could spend just $850 on a video card alone.
$135-$220 on RAM (depending if you wanted 4Gb or 8Gb)
$340 on a Q6600 (2.4ghz) quad core CPU - which you can overclock easily to 3.2Ghz for ultimate power.

That's assuming you have the $400 motherboard that can do the overclocking for you, and the $90 cooler to keep it stable.

Your $1200 budget fails.

it doesnt have to be the ultimate gaming computer
just has to run a few of the newer games out

You could spend 20k on a computer, doesnt mean the cost is justified....

If i was building a new computer no way would i spend more than ~$1200-1500 on a tower, the performance you get these days is extremely good value considering there's few games that will really take advantage of it.

OP - What i normally do is go over to Whirlpool's PC Suggestions and mix and match stuff around if you want particular specs.
Driftlab
so basically you want a decent tower? you have lcd monitor, keyboard, mouse, OS etc?

CPU: AMD x4 Phenom II 810 $259
Motherboard: G-B MA78G-DS3HP $123
RAM: 4GB DDR2 1066 (kingston HyperX) $91
HDD: Western Digital 640GB 16MB SATAII $98
GPU: 1GB ATi 4890 Powercolor $375
Case: Thermaltake V9 $125
PSU: Vantec ION2+ Ultra Quiet SLI 520w $81
Optical Drive: Pioneer 216BK $28

Total: $1180

Why AMD? benchmarks for gaming show it to be a few fps behind the I7, it best bang for buck CPU. You could go I7 but you'd have to down grade gfx card and other items. Going the AMD way will save you about $200-$300.
4890 is a beast. I do not at any time recommend you buy a $800 graphics card, that is ridiculous... it depreciates very fast and its probably only at that price because there is no competition which NVIDIA use to do... release the 8800GT/GTX for $800....

AMD: $1260
Intel: $1360

Pm me for specs.
