hey all

i know the title sounds odd since it must be working if i am on here asking how it doesnt work but i will explain as best as a kiwi can tongue.gif

i have a wireless net work using Net gear and bigpond.

but the interwebs stops working,

it seems to be to the net work still.

the network cant be to blame since my Xbox and flat mates PC works fine.

i have some werid file called "zlclient.exe" and "vsmon" which i cant "end process"

I have tryed turning off all the firewalls it still doesnt work.

the reason its working atm is because i have it wired in.

its got me fucked.

If the internet works fine on ethernet, but not on wireless... than Im gonna blame the netgear router.

Cause quite frankly, I think they are buckets of shit.

Its likely overheating and killing the wireless. If you power cycle it, does the wireless spring back into life? You can try standing it on its end (so its mounted vertically), and/or fire up your dremel and open up the vents in the case to allow more cooling. Another method is to remount the guts of the router inside an old power supply case, and use the fan from the power supply to keep things cool.

Every netgear wireless product I've ever owned has over heated and had to be powercycled to restore wifi. The weird thing was that anything already connected to it would lose the wifi connection... the net would just stop working. But you could ping the router etc all ok. Any new device trying to connect wouldnt find the router though.

I've since bought a Dynalink RTA1025W and its sitting in exactly the same place the Netgear WGR614v6 was and hasnt overheated since I bought it.

PS - If you're worried about those process and file names, just google them and/or run malware bytes(.org) + spybot (safer-networking.org).

wireless = shit....plain and simple... i workin in the RBWH in comms and nets and we hate the wireless network her but due to complaing docters and shit we have to keep it.

also id say u have viruses/malware/spyware or watever...scan that shit..

the network its self isnt dropping since the internet still works on my xbox and flat mates PC fine.

good tip TRK for googling the .exe files.

FUCK I HATE THIS SHIT

When the net drops next time, just try this.

- Press the windows key (between ctrl and alt) + r to bring up the 'Run' Dialog.
- Type CMD then press enter.
- When the black DOS looking screen comes up, type in ping www.google.com . Take a screen shot.
- Then type ping 209.85.153.104 .Take a screen shot.
- Then type ipconfig. Take a screenshot
- Post screen shots here

Grr, did you read my post?

Netgear router + heat = wireless dies.

The wired stuff works fine. Its ONLY the wireless that dies.

Power cycle router. If wireless is restored, take on pro tips regarding extra cooling. Alternatively, take the even bigger pro tip and put it in the bin. Then avoid DLink, Belkin and Acer products too. Try Billion, Dynalink, Draytek.

If wireless ISNT restored... time to start snooping problems on your end. Update firmware / verify signal strengths / clean up card + reseat (if a desktop, if a laptop then have fun pulling that apart tongue.gif) etc.

If it's overheating...

Just take the guts out of your wireless router and sit it on a bench or something. Or if you're a fix it once type person, do what TRK suggested and dremel the vents even larger. Or if you really want to get technical, open a 3" hole with a hole saw and bolt on a 3" computer fan. Forced induction, yo.
