Grab an "Application to Modify Vehicle" form, fill out the form, pay small admin fee.

stab in the dark would be, bigger fine than original admin fees to do it legaly?
and possibly a defect
MX_Leigh
im not too worried about a defect because its just a $300 gemi with rust so im planning on bogging it and doing a quick cheap job on it. the car is blue so if i spray it in another tone of blue will it still be legal?

Hey man if ur car is dark blue and u paint it light blue u dont have to change a thing cos its still blue u only have to change it when u paint it a diff colour like red, black or white so u can paint it any colour blue u want and not have to worry about changing a thing its only for a diff colour that u have to change it on ur rego
MX_Leigh
lets say i do the bottom half blue and the top half in a matte black will that still be classed as blue?

Yeah, it's all fairly open to interpretation, just don't go painting it black with a blue pinstripe without touching a form.

ok cheers mate. i was thinking blue then matte black from the door handles up or something

mate, you cannot really get in trouble when changing the color of your car, long as its not a matte colour....matte colours are illegal because they offer no reflective properties
blacky83
Sources on that? Never heard anything about no matte colours, not sure I agree with that.

As for multiple colours, it's based upon the majority colour as to what should be on the rego. They're not going to get out the tape measure and calculate the areas. So long as you're not trying to trick the system should be fine.

First I've heard that. Sounds like the sort of bullshit a young cop might make up.
ke70kid
nope i agree with that about the matte paint.
u can get defected for matte paint, been told by a cop (mate) not that long back
blacky83
Show me where it's written in legislation and I'll believe you. If anything a matte colour is going to be safer, doesn't reflect glare and whatnot. What about fading paint? Older cars without reflective paint. I just don't buy it...

Your mate is shit at his job. There is nothing in any of the TransSA Info bulletins that mentions type or condition of paint, Matt paint does not violate any ADRs. Furthermore, in daytime it wouldn't matter and during the night you should have your lights on.

Look the most obvious thing that's going to happen if you fail to update the colour on your registration is that your going to be pulled over regularly. Why? Because your plates are saying it's a one colour (say red) and they see a another colour (say blue). They'll instantly suspect the plates don't belong to your car and you'll spend half an hour on the side of the road explaining it's been resprayed, confirming VIN numbers and so forth. Then you can fine you if they wish for failing to update registration details.

Ultimately it's not hard to update - You simply visit a TransSA customer service centre, tell them you want to update the colour, fill out the form and that's it. Usually they want to see the car to confirm you're telling the truth. If there's any fee involved, it will be minimal, $20-$30 at most. They'll then send out a new registration label with the new colour.

Off topic - Also never heard of the matte case. Indeed, if that was the case, it would mean any dirty car would also be illegal, because it covered the reflective properties.
