Its the opposite, it is way too cheap, good quality 20x30 printing cost more than $25.

yeah we are only doing it so cheap because he just wants to get his name out there and just make enough money to get him a bit more set up
Jason_R
He isn't going to afford a decent setup at $25 a shoot.

That wouldn't be enough to cover his costs.

maybe he isn't looking to make money or that.. And just recover some costs.. not all.

Its a good idea to start. He may be investing into getting one.

Now now kids, lets not go on the rampage until we've seen this guys mates photos. Just because he's loosing money or making really shitty quality big prints doesn't mean he should get torched just yet.

The portfolio will say more than words.

Portfolio of what??? Cars???

What for???

Because if it is to 'MAKE MONEY'..... forget it!

If you want to make money.... you need to change the subject matter.

In this country there may be 15 odd magazines / publications that need photos. That's about it! And the work for them is already 'stiched up'

But... let them have it.

Shoot cars for fun..... shoot people for money. 15 Mags compared to a million people in SEQ who just love family portraits and phots of their kids. You will get 10 times the amount for money for a print of a child than a car.... any day of the week.... and there are 500,000 more customers ( families ) compared to car lovers. If you can't get $800 for a portrait session... you are doing something wrong.

Just forget the the whole " shoot cars = get money ".... just too hard. ( Except for those actually doing it right now.... and they probably deserve it... but I think there are enough car photographers in the world at the moment.

Pretty poor attitude really, just because people are already taking photos doesn't mean you can't compete with them, especially if you've got something new to offer or a cheaper rate.

There's a lot of bad advice in this thread, not from wat'r.

$25 dollars, what's wrong with that? If I was going to be taking photos for my local car club I'd either ask 25 or 50, setup costs? It costs me time only to go and setup some stands and my gear, I've already got the camera gear. As far as prints go, I'd be providing a dvd of x amounts of shots and charging extra for prints.

Nothing wrong with what the OP's friend is doing, but I would like to see some examples of work.

Not bad, there's not really anything too special there, he needs practice and definitely needs some lighting for his night shots.

As much as it sucks, I'd even offer to do some for free until he gets better - after all it'd get his name out, and a lot of people love photos of their car no matter what it looks like.

Not meaning to offend his level of work, I guess I'd be about the same really.

Problem with offering free work is being nailed down as "that dude who shoots shit for free", which is never good for someone looking to get into the scene which, I think, is accurate to Wat'rs description. Every Tom, Dick and Harry who owns a prosumer or SLR think's they can shoot shit for a living. Even people who shoot shit for a living will attest to it not having an ever-steady flow of cash vs a 'standard' 9-5 job, which would totally suck, needing to travel interstate for a big gig but not having the cash to get there for instance..

But whatever, if he can go pro, good on him, I'll dream of it while I talk on my company-paid mobile, whilst driving in my company-owned vehicle on the weekend with company-paid fuel, buying/doing shit with my money that comes from a reliable pay source. Being a pro photographer is like being a pro playboy, the very slim minority can pull it off and "get rich".

I agree with Bax too, nothing in that DA profile hits me as professional or even serious-amateur, I'd like to see the results of this photoshoot.
