By the time I got to it, driver had departed, perhaps by friends to hospital.

You can see the event had every chance of being a fatal. To that possibility, and not photographed from inside, in the middle of the rear seat is a foam-construction childs booster seat. You can see the its backrest in the rear view shot.

Now that booster seat is pushed hard up against the drivers seat backrest, that is in turn is also pushed forward owing floorpan deformation (tow bar knocked off for a six). Thing is - the baby booster seat is snapped clean at its lower backrest, the 'seat-bum' faces downward, jammed!

Had an infant been in it at the time, the kid would have suffered very serious leg injuries (let alone potentially deadly head and neck trauma etc).

Noted the driver left behind a bit of scalp and hair (at central vertical pillar at top,-weld seperation) and some claret on the steering wheel, driver seat, consol etc, I expect he or she fumbled out and used a mobile to raise help, the car as you can see is not easily spotted by passing traffic either. Certainly concussion.

HWP arrived on scene, took details and departed to a more urgent job nearby.

I would expect this spot, and a nearby one of same construction to have barrier within 12 months. Just have to weigh up if it is proper to do so, as we then risk having edge of road barrier impacting vehicles being deflected into the oncoming lane, be that occupied with vehicles or not.

Interesting consideration. What about the use of wire rope barriers to prevent the pictured incident but capture the car to prevent the above scenario?

Wyee Road in question, is purely a local GovCo responsibility (I had thought State and hence RTA, but no), so that that extent;- the ball is now in the hands of Lake Macquarie City Council. Head engineering fella has seen the pics here at Boost and will action the situation as soon as possible.

Investigation vis wire-rope response and funding.

Reality has it that a barrier install could be a year or three away owing monetary issues. Anyhow, to help him with remedial action, might grab our local independent mayor and state member (one and the same) to come on board to help beg for funding from the State Treasury. (A state which is bust).

Once upon a time, mmm, back in the 70's we'd have barrier sourced within a week and installed within three. Those days are long gone.

Had correspondence from LMCC re advocated barrier for this location; the matter is being raised at a meeting of the Lake Macquarie Traffic Facilities and Road Safety Committee at a meeting on 9 June 2009.

It will then be referred to Council for its 22 June 2009 sitting and we can expect a determination.

Success!

Had feedback from Lake Macquarie City Council, 13 August 2009. Edited.

Council adopted the advice and recommendation of the Traffic Facilities and Road Safety Committee.

A determination has been made by the 'Traffic & Transportation Engineer' his recommendation is;
Install safety barriers on each side of Wyee Road at Morisset and Wyee, at the identified three culverts at 1.47km, 1.55km and 2.26km south of the Wyee Road/Dora Street/Mandalong Road/Freemans Drive roundabout.

* It is recommended that Brifen Wire Fence safety barrier be installed.

Simply a matter now of sourcing funds and organising install.
