Just bought a Canon 50D today. Comes with 17-85mm lense.

Still learning but decided to just go all out instead of having to upgrade later.

Cheers. Will update regularly.

Alright! Ready for some CC!?!?

Nice car but I can see room for plenty of improvement to show it off a lot better!

Firstly with the S15 shots, you're in desperate need of decent flash-fill, which is quote literally filling the shot with some light as the front end is in the shadows (Yes i did notice you used flash in the first shot).

The second bunch are kinda dull, i can relate with the bird on having nothing to shoot so shooting the pet (unfortunately we have a cat), but in the second shot it's very soft.. wholllllly crap, take your 50D off auto too.. you green boxer (look at the dial - it's a green box tongue.gif). The first shot is a bit "wtf a blurry tree-line" second shot is sharp at least, third is very soft, i can see why too - shot at 1/15th, ISO1600.. time for that flash-fill again.. and the last shot of the fish, it's focused on the tank not the fish - that means it's time for manual focus.

Trick for flash-fill for your on-board flash is this - Use as minimally as you can, direct flash almost always looks terrible, pop the flash and use the iso/flashpower button to pick flash power adjustment, roll the aperture wheel (that's what i call it, menu wheel? select wheel?) to dial down or up, look on the top LCD to notice this, then practice. Using auto will usually run higher-than-needed ISO to keep the shutter fast and use 100% (or 1:1) power flash to blast the F--- out of everything to do the same, all in the aim to keep it sharp but makes it look awful.

Grab your manual and look on the index about flash power adjustment as it may have changed from the 40D to the 50D on how to adjust. Remember to adjust it back to 0 though as the next time you use your camera no doubt it'll be a mad rush and you'll forget to change it back and you'll need 1:1 power and it'll still be dialed down.

Also read up about IS on your lens, learn what "f. stops" are (easy as) and then remember how many stops your IS will be good for (it's three but read it anyway), learn what ISO is and why it's not good to let it go too high.

That's this weeks homework tongue.gif. Now i hope I didn't offend you because if I just wanted to insult you I wouldn't have spent my time writing all that and no I don't think I'm the worlds best photographer, I just thought maybe the small amount of knowledge I have may help you a little rather than no body really posting anything at all. smile.gif

Yeah I got it yesterday arvo so we decided to go out for a bit but it got dark really quick. So the shots of the s15 are all really pitch black and I've used fill light to make them a bit better. I'll definitely have a play around with that flash power adjustment today.

I was using it on "P" too lol, not the green box.

Thanks for the tips. That's what I'm after.

A few more I just took whilst wandering outside... Cheers.

Shame this one didn't quite focus on the bird properly. I've cropped it down a bit as my lense won't zoom in that far. biggrin.gif

I'll show you one day if you give me some photography pointers tongue.gif PM me.

Mm the shadow in the last set of the s15 annoys me but is fairly unavoidable. Haha.

+1 for shadow being in the way,
but i also think that this shot would be better if the front wheel was turned to the right of the picture, just something to focus on at the front of the shot rather then the car being dead straight, but thats just me

awesome shot none the less thumbsup.gif

Yeah agree with that too.

Bax, I'm not looking to make enemies, especially when you could out skill me and my arrogant ways wink.gif I barely update my thread so you should make one anyway.
Bax
Yeah its all good man, didn't offend I was just laughing at how it could have been taken.
Bax
Chris, how'd you go on sunday, did you get out and do those shots? How'd they come out.

I ended up cruising off to yeppoon.

1. Move car
2. Move shoot time to sunset or sunrise.
3. Use flash fill in

I think this shot could have been alot better if it wasnt shot at 2pm in the arvo...

Did a shoot yesterday for a friend.

the rolling ones come out pretty good chris...

shit yeah those first to are really good mate

very nice mate
nofxhardcore
Thanks guys. I'm happy with how they turned out.
Severe
Ohh fuck yeah Chris, top job! Really impressed ay.
Bax
Agreed, why's he driving in the bike lane though haha.

Third from last is good, probably my pick. Possibly could have come around right a bit more but there's no light coming in, but yeah I like the idea of it.

Top three look a little soft? Second one in particular? Could just be the hosting site knocking them back a touch, liking the selective colouring on number 1.

I think if you swung left to include the boring grey building into it more it could have worked out good as well.

And the only other thing I had was the third from the top, would have been good as a landscape, to get the full front of the car in.

Definitely seeing improvements though.
nofxhardcore
Thanks for the comments. I've got about a hundred shots so these are just a few of my picks. I'll have a look and post up some different angles tonight or tomorrow.
Kane
*Double post*.

Rolling shots are good. But with the first couple, im feeling to much emphasis has been placed on the backdrop, also need to work on your focusing points, as the car doesn't look as clear as it should. Also with paint like he has, its really good to utilise all of the afternoon sun as you can.

Edit: Also looking at your exif data, you shot the top few at 1/30th and you've kept the iso at 100. That's way to low for that time of day, and im assuming hand held which could be the reason for a bit of lack in clarity. I've found it's alot better going with aperture priority on stills and statics as it's going to control your DOF. But being you shot at f22, i would have thought more would be in focus. But your picking up on things quickly, can be a bit overwhelming at first.
TUN35
I also find your boarder way to distracting.

Comp in the shots is pretty good. Last rolling shot would be my pic of the bunch smile.gif
nofxhardcore
I'll definitely switch to aperture priority. You reckon around 200 iso? Also, using a lower aperture or?

Yeah pics were handheld. I should have used the tripod. Next time I'll get it out.

Thanks alot for the comments.

Watch for distracting things in your background like street signs for moving shots. If you are going to use a bit of the highway, pick a bit you know without having to look at it, and reel off shots in those sections, it will reduce things in the background which for me are quiet distracting.

Watermark probably isnt a good idea over the top of what your subject is either.

Also, when positioning a car, use either full sunlight or full shadows, dont use half and half otherwise the exposure wont come out right.

Hope this helps..
the_scarecrow
i like it better with boarders
Nick_
Lance is, as always, on the money. I guess its hard considering our eyes can see so much more detail than a camera can handle and considering a scene for shooting, I guess it's just bump in the learning curve.
nofxhardcore
Yeah. Cheers guys. It's all good experience.
nofxhardcore
Few new shots. Went for a wander around the Gardens playing with different aperture settings. Cheers.

for the waterfall
its great but it could be much better with a show shutter speed
to get the silky effect

Fair enough. I was going for the fast shutter speed to get the droplets...

Nice shots.. 1st one seems too crowded imho. 2nd one is cool but not to sure about that sky.. looks really fake.
Cool photos though, good to see your doing something a bit different.

Good to see you out and trying some proper looking shots, big advancement over the other shots of your S15.
nofxhardcore
Thanks Nick.
Bax
1st and 4th are my picks.

I did see you on Saturday too man, just don't think I waved.
