Hey guys, instead of buying a PS3 I decided to upgrade my computer. Here are the current specs.

ASUS P5GZ-MX Motherboard
P4 3.2GHZ
2Gb Geil 667MHz RAM
160GB 7200rpm HD
LiteOn 20x Lightscribe Burner
nVidia 8500GT
430W PSU
etc.

I can run most games on medium/medium-high without too much lagging, but I want to get some newer games and want something that will cope. Where would you guys start?

EDIT: Should probably add the motherboard can only run a 800MHz FSB for the CPU and 2GB of RAM @ 667MHz.

Couple of hundred bucks, the computer only cost me $1k two years ago. I was thinking PSU would be the first thing to do?
Chris
I'd go RAM, HD and PSU but i've never built one.

At the moment looking at this for the CPU, this PSU (maybe a bit of overkill, but it's still relatively cheap) and this for a graphics card. Any problems with this? I'll be removing my graphics card cooler, adding a better CPU fan and something for the empty drive at the front.
systemcrasher
i'd probably go for RAM and CPU first if you are running DX9 (430W PSU is bit low for my liking but if you are not having troubles with it atm, don't really need to change it)

But if you are running DX10, get a new video card and PSU first, then CPU and RAM (I'm assuming that you will need extra power for the new video card)

What do you want it to do?

If using vista put 4 gig of ram in. If XP stay with 2.

Buy better graphics card something like a 260 or a 280 or up to 295 depending on how much you want to spend. But you will need a bigger powersupply.

I wouldnt do anything else that will be enough.

If you want to play all of the new top end games then the only thing id keep out of that box is your dvd burner and start again.

My comp specs:

AMD AM2 6000+ dual core
4GB ram
XFX 9600GT 512MB Graphics (about to buy another)
22" Asus Lcd
G15 keyboard
2 x dvd burners
1 x 1TB HDD
1 X 250GB HDD
1 x 80GB HDD
700W power supply
and much more...

Whats the point of saying you the dvd burners, HDDs and RAM without specifying the specs of the items?

Worth noting that theres little point having more than 3gb of ram unless you have Vista ultimate, which last time I checked set you back a few hundred bucks.

Also.

Grab some 800mhz ram or higher preferably if you intend to get an AMD processor.
wildwizard
Just checked the specs on your MB the PCIe x16 slot only runs at x4 so you might as well junk it.

http://www.asus.com/Product.aspx?P_ID=tETxzdhyOHOJ5pqv

Which means your looking at a MB + CPU + RAM as a start.
stoojn
hahah some of you guys are dreaming.. only 3gb with aything less tha Vista ultimate? vista home premium can handle 8gigs of ram and ultimate 16 or more...
i do agree with wild wizard, if you dont want a new motherboard, don't bother spending any more on a new graphics card than a $100, or else your bottlenecking the system...
i'd say it's not really worth upgrading a system like that if you're serious about gaming, but if your a tight arse and u want to upgrade it, CPU, and graphics card are your cheapest bang for buck option.
