A question for all you professional photographers on boost.

What do you charge for the rights and usage of your images?

dunno.gif

How much for exclusive rights?
How much for single use rights?

Everyone tends to charge differently.

I tend to lower the price for people I like, or people who are likely to buy again.

Check out some stock photo websites for how they do their pricing.

Myself, I charge $12 a high res photo for a single person if they want single shots for personal use, this is through email + on a disc for printing if they want it to.

have a look around and see what there is.

Apparently not a lot of people sell the exclusive rights, think about it, it means you can never sell that photo again, but they can, ergo if you sell it completely the price should be huge, i think i read someone's exclusive price is the normal price times ten.

Depends on the customer and also the photo IMO.

If you're not going to ever use the shot again there's no point restricting usage or sales by pricing it out of reach.

Flipside is that if it's a shot of something that WILL sell or will be popular I tend to price it up higher.
matt mead
its a case by case bases. Priceing comes with expereince, these days i have been chargeing 35$ for a personal usuage, 85-100 for limitied useage commercial photos (press releases, sponsership portfolio, hang in there workshop and so on)

For magazine ads and so on, i just go with gut feeling. But i have the attitude of i dont care if i make the sale or not.. Thats what i want take it or leave it lol

Well I have someone looking to make 500-1000 reproduction copies at A1 size.

Full size, full reproduction rights. Exclusive.
dwvr
doing event coverage for magazine:
drop the file size down to 1500 on the longest side. for about 15 images i get $100 not including the text.

those photos are not individually edited (just batched through photoshop; unsharp mask, auto colour, auto contrast, resize, remove exif data, embed copyright) then burn to disk and send to editor.

by no means is this feature work... just basic show coverage.

...forgot to add... thats single use.

It's to one of the performers from the Sexpo event I covered.

To be used to promote her and her studio.

What would you charge?
matt mead
no idea, i only shoot cars so i have no experience in that field... just go with ur gut feel
Lance
$5-10 per reproduction would be alright I guess. I would get a number they are going to produce and then go off that. And make sure there will be no more reproductions without your consent.

it all varies... car at the spit to car rolling it at the drags. base it on how many other ppl have the shot chance of it happening again could a trained monkey take that shot. obviously if its never goin to happen again and no one else got the shot then can ask for more

Yeah, Cheers.

Ended up charging $105, with my logo on every reproduction.

Did pretty good smile.gif
Lance
$105 for the lot?
matt mead
^^^if thats the case all im going to do is shake my head sad.gif Personally logo on something is worth nothing.
Lance
You're not the only one Matt. Hence why companies think they can hire a 18 year old with a DSLR who offering to do a service that a pro charges over a few thosand for, for only $200.

For the one image.

Image isn't exclusive, limited use and number of reproduction (500), and already have a buyer for the same image.

My logo and number on the image is worth more to me at this point.

Wasn't the best of an image either, ended up quite blurred..

And I already have a line of other clients looking for the same images, magazines etc.

So wasn't much point in spending time chasing after a private individual sale.

My photo, my price.

I've been firm with the better valued buyers.

Magazines etc.

I don't see much point to charging a few thousand for an image that isn't really worth much to me personally.

And at this point in time, my logo and number mean more to me then money.
The poster is going Australia wide, so will get broad advertising.

In the end, it's my photo, my price.

I agree your price and your photo, but dude thats a kick in the face.

Logo means nothing man, from my research/expereince i watermark photos with my website and potential clients tell me they still forget my webaddress.. I doubt you will get any future work from having you number on the poster... the poster is to advertise someone else not you. Therefore i person is going to be looking at the ad not the person who took the photo.

I think you will also learn that magazines pay less then certain indivduals. Commercial sales to business and indivduals is where the money is at.

Do you mind posting up the add??

The more I think about it the more I agree with you.

It's a bit late now, but I'll keep this all in mind for next time.

It's a bit hard to put a price on a image, hence why I was asking for what the rest of those with plenty of experience place on theirs.

But thanks for your input.

What would you have charged?

Didn't you say you would charge up to $100 for it? Earlier on in the thread?
matt mead
From bathurst 12hr, i charged 90$ an image, for limited commercial use in press realease, website news pages and other small scale commercial things... but most of thes guys bought 10+ images which i offered a nice discount for. Now if it was to go on a poster would be a different story.

My gut feel for that is about 1K but depends on image and client (larger clients charge more, unknown client less).

Im different to most in the fact that i charge what i want. if you dont like that price you dont get the image. thats the deal.. I dont need the money as i have a norml 9-5 job
Kyl3
If it's your photo and your price why did you ask us for help?

Thanks for that mate smile.gif

I think from now on, I'll charge more.

My initial feeling was $350. I stupidly lowered it down, thinking $350 was an unrealistic amount.

I'll keep it in mind, cheers for the info.

I actually started the thread asking on peoples opinions and pricing.

So I wasn't asking for help.

Try again thumbsup.gif
Kyl3
1. I wasn't having a dig.
2. Opinions and help are pretty much the same thing, check definitions.
3. No worries, anytime

If it's for a race team and they do not have their own printer I usually organize the printing for them and include the photo usage in the cost. So say 200 A3 posters with a couple of my shots on them + their logos etc + design and print = Around $800

Has been popular

I was asking peoples opinions about how much should be charged, and how much they charge.

It was to see how mine differed.

But from the replies, seems I'm undercutting myself sadly.

But I'll learn from that thumbsup.gif

Thanks for your input however.
