Well, looks like our little clan might venture into this mad-max, dirt-party, because it looks like a fun way to spend a day. The first race meet appears to be in 2010, so there is plenty of time.

In my spare time, which is limited, I'll be building up a race-car. After a little careful consideration, I deem my Jeep chassis to be useless, as the parts are difficult to find, the suspension and steering is rubbish, the chassis is cracked from being jumped with a 302 in it.

Luckily I have a friend with a scrap towing company, so it won't be long until an affordable shell pops up. When it does, I'll jump onto the CAD and see what can be cooked up.

Until then, all we know is:

-I want a much longer shell.

-Powered by a 302 Cleveland block, if I have the funds by late December I'll pull it apart and squeeze some power and displacement from it.

-Desert-dueler tyres, because they look lovely.

A damn good way to spend your weekends, racing one and fixing broken stuff the next lol

I was thinking it could be a mission trying to get anything up and running by the first race but with racing not starting till 2010 its bloody easy done.

I just sent Matt a pm to get copy's of the regs for building the cars. But by the looks of it almost anything goes in the open classes smile.gif

I can get a B2000 for about $100, I'm not going to just yet - as I don't know the rules regarding utes. Would be a nice starting point, as I could fit a Ford rear-end and tub the back for the duelers without too much hassle.

Hello Mundi,

You can run a ute no worries, but you can't use an aluminium tray. One of the more interesting utes is a Datsun 1600. The driver has stretched it out a foot or so and dropped a tri power (triple carb) 360 Chrysler v8 in the back of it. It also runs a shortened auto trans and jag diff. We have tried dessert duelers on our last car without much success, It was very loose and unpredictable (but fun). I would build your car (ride height) based around a tyre size of approx 245/60/15 but leave enough room for the bigger tyres because if the duelers don't work you may want to run the bigger Hoosiers at some stage. Most of the time we run between 12-20 psi even when using street tyres. We spend a fair amount of time adjusting pressure and even 1 or 2 psi makes a fair difference.

Cheers Matt

Sure, it would be good if everyone gets to have a drive at some-point.
I'm just going to make a list of those involved, as I think we have reached our limit without becoming crowded.

People on the Pink Machine (need a name) Team:

-Mundi
-Dave
-Belle
-Marcus
-Iza
-Matt
-Alex
-Clairebear

So, Iza and I will start work on the car. Hopefully there will be a DC club we can join by next year.

Sure mate, at the moment I will just be taking the tub and cab off and doing the usual rust removal, body-work crap that I love so much....
I'll get a few of you out to my place to give me a hand fitting the engine (someone will need to make sure it doesn't fall on my head while I tack in mounts. ) and put the tub and cab back on.
Cheers,
Mundi

Hello Mundi,

A mid mounted V8 Cleveland powered mazda ute !!!!. You have definitely got the idea of what dirt circuit is all about.

I have put part of the roll cage rules up on DCSA, in your intro thread.

Here's a bit of inspiration:-

This is a engine one of our Adelaide members built a While ago (it would be a hand full on the street let alone dirt)
IPB Image

Here's the rear engined 360 datsun ute. The VW behind it runs a space frame , fibre glass shell and a
worked 308 in the back.
IPB Image

And a couple of video (in car from a spaced frame 4wd nissan gtir)

It'll be about three weeks until I have the room for the Mazda, when it's here I'll get you to come out and help me strip it before I start the panel work! wink.gif
I'll pm all of those involved when I pick it up, be aware that the farm is a fair trip out of Adelaide.

Tub and cab will have to come off before I tackle the problem of rear suspension. Might have to ask Matt what setup they find works best.
