cheers mate, i was also wondering if anyone knows anything about the Sigma range, Are they any good or should i steer clear?
I've had the Sigma 70-300 non-APO on my old K100D and to be honest, you only have to use your common sense and look at the price difference. There's no way a sub-$300 lens will match up against a post-$500 lens. They're in different leagues man.
If you can play in the $800-$1000 league the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 EX DG is a fantastic tele said to equal (and some say better) the Canon L (pro) series 2.8 but I'm not too sure about the Nikon, I think it's a fair bit better again than the Cannon so the sigma may sit back with it.
For a cheap-ass, 'oh well' if you drop it lens that has a macro function, does "ok" with CA, suffers from softness all over and is a slow, pudgey and long mid-long zoom 70-300 and you can live with that - then go for it. Although if I were you I'd pay the tiny bit extra and go APO, it's extra coating to help fight off the CA but ultimately if you think a $200-$300 lens is going to rival the others mentioned then forget it because it will only be a disappointment with $0 resale, you could either look at it like a $300 zoom that you dig for what it is OR a $300 hole in your pocket that you should've kept and saved the rest for the better lens you were thinking of.
That's how I see it. Oh and with the lens-hood on, the Sigma is friggin' HUGE, like.. 'Duck please' huge when you turn around in a room.
Oh and next time, just google "sigma 70-300 vs nikon 70-300", surely there has to be someone else drawing the same comparison and you'd probably find getting the same answer.
Get the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 and you won't go wrong. Pro-spec lens for sub $1000. Winnah.
