Full Version: Two Stroke Power Ups....

Hi all,

Am in the middle of doing up a 00 model RM Suzi 250 stroker whilst my leg repairs itself.
I've done the pipe, silencer, mains jet, gearing, airbox mods, powervalve mod, and i replaced the reeds with stock ones.
The bike goes pretty damn well for what it is - but when is enuff enuff ? - never....

Now i'm being told about these dual stage reeds and carbon fibre reeds that apparently throw out smoother throttle response and more HP. My experience with reeds is that they tend to move the power from one area and dump into another - ie , lose everything down low but you get a fuckin arm stretcher up top and nothing in between. Which is not what i'm after for this particular bike....i want excellent throttle response and a smooth, albeit linear curve right thru...

So before I shell out $100 or so bickies to find out that it aint like the "brochure" says - has anyone had any real world experience with either the dual stage reeds or the carbon fiber jobbies ??

Thanks
Si.

get your reeds and put a hole in one side of it and it'll work heaps better *snigger*

my old wr 200 had chewed out about a 1/3 of one side of the reed and it made itself awesome. haha.

go to the bike shop and ask, advice is free, and from people who get paid to sell all different sorts of stuff, its usually invaluable too

everyone always forgets to go to the shop first before coming online and asking for advice....

Mate - I used to own a bike business...IF there's a sale in it for the bike shop, they'll tell you anything... That's why i was asking for first hand infomation from someone that had actually used one of these reeds. And don't take this the wrong way, but drilling fiberglass aint the smartest thing to do so close to your intake - fibres continually peel away unless sealed and crap like this, ends up screwing your rings, piston etc. Not a great move at all...

i was fucking with you. you would have to be a dim wit to do that to a reed.

thats why you go ask several bike shops. or question them about several products offering the same supposed thing. go to a trusted mechanic, i know i trust mine and do as he recommends. even when he isnt getting the coin from me asking him maintenance advice on something he is not be doing.

Mate - some of the answers you get on here - i don't no wat ppl are thinkin...lol.
All the qual mechs i know were road / race based, i've already asked a couple re their opinions and they said wat i originally asked - "find someone that's used them"...sqaure one?
I've done quite a few tafe courses on mechs myself, but i just didn't cover the performance side of smokers and I've not been into dirt bikes for years and years. Apparently these two stage reeds are reasonably new tech and work like a double edged sword,ie provide two "more agressive" powerbands...but if they are that great, why haven't manufacturer's borrowed the idea on the later model strokers - when they were still makin them....
Surely someone out there in boost land has used these reeds ? Surely ??

who and what the f*ck are you mitch? Those were some random comments.

if you can get your new r1 around a track as quick as i get my 6, ill be impressed... as curry stated. its not what you ride, its how you ride it...

just buy the set of reeds and use them, keep the standards too, see which you like best.. use them. only 100 bucks..

yoshi1000
alright already - I'll "NIKE" it seein as though no one will tell me about their reeds...So DONT all you ppl come asking about how the reeds went once i put 'em in - cause i aint tellin ya's !! lol.
And Mitch - piss off the 02 R1 and buy somthing with balls will ya? I recently had a gix1 on here with N20 for $8k - so where were ya then? haha!

The best type of reed valve are either the V force or boyseen's reed blocks as these are a total replacement of the stock block not just a replacement petal. But to get the most out of all mods it needs to be jetted properly. I am running a V forve reed block in my yz 250.
yoshi1000
A V Force reed block ? Hey can i ask , did this add power or just move it around in the range ? I am happy with the power curve ive got at mo, but cud always use a little more thru the entire range, cant we all....so i really dont want to move more power up top - itS ludicrous up there now. Dont spose you know anything about these dual stage reeds ?
Si.
YamahasRsweet
Yeah pretty much just runs alot crisper and a bit more power everywhere. Pretty much every reed system is dual stage I think, as it opens the inlet up slowly and more linear compared to how much air/fuel is sucked in.
yoshi1000
Thanks Y. Am going to look into these V force reeds now. I've got plenty of time b4 me cast comes off anyways - but you've sealed the deal for me, i'll definately be buying . Cheers.
