Finally now you guys can put your sik chromies on your commercial vehicles legally, as long as the wheel and tyre meets the load requirements. About the only thing to keep in mind is the 1.1 ratio rating rule when determining if a passenger car tyre is suitable ie. a 500kg light truck tyre must be replaced with a 550kg passenger car tyre. Yes you can replace with a passenger car tyre but must be higher load than the Light Truck tyre using the 1.1 rule.

Basically in Qld we can now legally put aftermarket wheels/tyres on 2wd commercial vehicles. This was released to the public on January 12th 2009. As long as the wheels and tyres are load rated to suit the vehicle then all is fine. If you want a passenger tyre to be fitted to your commercial vehicle then the max kg tyre load rating of the vehicle is to be multiplied by 10% which will give you the load rating in kgs required to use a passenger tyre construction on your commercial vehicle.

E.g. Original LT tyre load rating 104 = 900kgs

To legally use a passenger tyre you will need a 10% higher load rating than the commercial tyre (1.1 rule) = 990kgs

To legally use a passenger tyre on your commercial vehicle, you will need a passenger tyre load rating of 108 = 1000kg

interesting read.

Thanks for sharing Steve thumbsup.gif

Take note of this example:

Last year to do this would get you a defect.... it was considered a real dangerous thing to do.... could kill someone....blah...blah....blah

Today though ( because of the stroke of a pen by the Government ) it is not dangerous.... it is safe and legal. ( About time too )

So many rules / laws in these modern times are engineered and 'sold' to the population under the guise of other things.... it is un-real.
TUF120
Still require the light truck tyre on the vehicles as there is no passenger tyre available to suit the 2WD commercials with a high enough load rating or correct OD.

still not what everyone wants here in qld, give us nsw laws

I got the old Brigstone Eagers on my Hilux and got a flat the other day. I had no idea as the tyre stayed up with a reading of 5psi on the gauge. The reason that I tell you this is due to A discussion that I had with the former transport minister and It was explaned to me that the tyres side wall must be able to support the vehicle if there is a sudden loss of pressure. Well there it is my eagers stayed up even without pressure in them. Now try that with a commodore or falcon ute with the same gvm as my Hilux.

Hey guys and Gals,

Awesome news and it is legal as well...........

got pulled over today 16/03/2009 on centenary highway for a "random check" and was told my wheels could be illegal (245/35/20 on 2008 Ford Ranger). the cop checked his rolling diameter placard as well as mine and to his suprise they are legal then he tried tell me about the load rating to which i knew mine were good, but he asked for the instruction manual and he checked the factory spare wheel again to his surprise it was legal, i then asked if that would be all and if i could go to which he replied .. this will now be a random breath testing...

Your joking.. you can't get me for speeding, you can't get me for defective tyres so now a breath test i ridicously replied.. yes he said , so i blew a 00000 reading and he had nothing but a shitty look on his face, so i smiled and said catch ya later....

so 1 to us , 0 to police

You just got lucky mate, doesn't make it legal if a newbie cop doesn't defect you.

Std Ranger has 215/70r15c which is 683mm and load rating of 107 (975kg)

The diameter is correct with 245/35r20 tyres being 680mm. But this size tyre only has a load index of 95 (690kg). To use a passenger constructed tyre on your Ranger in Qld you would need a load index of 111 (1090kg) which uses the 1.1 rule (+10%) as in my above posts.

As the police are trained by Qld Tpt over the next future months you will find it will be the flavour of the month again, so just be careful out there in your mini trucks/utes. smile.gif

Oh well I have aloys on both my Rodeo's ; both legal size, but the cops don't take any notice; must be because I drive like an oldie; or the big 5 poster Bullbars I have on both my utes.

Original spec tyre on Ranger was load rated 90 = 600kg, so my new tyres load rated at 95 = 690kg is above using 1:1 rule
I hope new rules won't render the rims and tyres illegal??? dunno.gif

tyres in question are Achilles ATR Sport i believe the tyres are around $275 ea.

Im keen to throw 17's on my van teritory rims. with stock tires does this comply anyone?
TUF120
The following are the biggest load rated tyre sizes out there for the 2wd ute/van applications requiring load rated tyres. As said before there are others but either are too wide to clear guards, too tall in diameter or not enough load rating.

Remember the tallest OD allowed is 15mm over the standard size on the tyre placard of the vehicle. 185R14 is 650mm OD, 195R14 is 666mm OD.

Another thing to remember is the rim needs to be load rated as well with most of them needing about 900kg rating and a high percentage of the rims coming in at around 700kg this is a problem for you to consider also. Some of the load ratings below may not be high enough for your vehicle so check the placard first.

215/60R17 Nankang CW-20 (109n Load) 690mm OD
225/55R17 Maxxis IPRO (102W Load) 680mm OD
235/55R17 Continental Vanco (103w Load) 690mm OD
235/55R17 Maxxis MAP1 (103H Load) 690mm OD

I have a hilux 07 SR5 2wd xtra cab. Tyre placard reads as follows:
15 x 6jj 205 70R 15
1200 front
1695 rear

Im looking for new wheels and tyres bigger than 15. Ive read the Qld transport info and Ive been told different things every time I go to a tyre dealer and its doing my head in. Does anyone have a similar hilux and has some decent looking wheels and tyres they can recommend? I dont care about cost. The factory mags are crap...naturally I wanted 18 or 20' but realise thats just not going to happen with load ratings etc...Im told 16' is it?...then Im told wait 12 months and it will change...any help would be appreciated!!!

Also - what load rating am I looking at?...Im a lil confused...newbie!!

My first post is the new laws, nothing is going to change in 12 months. I will try to list it out as simply as I can.

Your tyre placard size is 205/70R15 = 669mm diameter
Qld Tpt allow us to increase the diameter by 15mm if required. This brings your maximum usable diameter to 684mm

Your load ratings are calculated from the largest load on the placard which is always the rear, so your ute is 1695kg on the rear axle. Divide this by 2 because of the 2 wheels on the rear axle which gives us 847.50kg each wheel. Now refer to the load rating table below and the closest is 850kg which gives us a tyre load rating of 102. Disregard the red underlines.

You now need to find a tyre with a minimum load rating of 102 and no taller than 684mm. You can legally use the Maxxis Ipro from the list in my above post which is 680mm and a load of 102w. So that is your tyre sorted now the rim needs to be no less than 850kg after a few quick phone calls i found the following 17" wheels to suit.
