I'm curious..... and I'd like other threads to remain open, but seeing as everyone is changing the topic to defects/mvr/cop flaming, here's a place you can all do that

I'm by no means a mod, as you all know, but I'd suggest keeping it to what the reason was and not whinging about officers etc, especially if you are considering taking it further in the future.
Take it to PM if you want all the sordid details and remember this is a Public forum and that you don't need to be a member to read it.
On topic: I have never been defected and have hardly had a problem with any police officers.

The list: (not all at the same time)
Bald tyres
No head light (due to crash....the one that was there worked)
Engine too big (this was funny in my 1200)
Cracked windscreen...it 'just happend" ......
Oil leaks
Rust
No handbrake and rust (in a mini, was asked at a road side check to pull on hand brake....knowing it was not that good, I gave it a good reef and pulled it out of the floor)..at least the officer laughed
Noise (in my PP 13B RX3)
and have been charged with "miss use of a motor vehicle" ...got caught doing donuts at East Point.....

Front bar held on by cable ties
Number plate by cable ties
No muffler
No suspension travel (eventually reworded to very little)
No bump stops on my coilovers - WTF?????
Too much play in the steering rack
Not too bad for their first effort on the car but considering it passed at MVR with everything on it when they had me pulled over, it was a real waste of my time and MVR's.

man.... this is nuts....
is it possible that they are just cracking down on 'unroadworthy' cars?
and the 'imports' are the easiest to target for that?

i got pulled over for an RBT on my dirtbike on the way home from work... officer said the number plate was defaced (because it was slightly wrapped around), not visible 20m away, no light for it, not on seperate bracket, no rego label on me (once again its a dirtbike) and no L plate

They can do that if they please.
Just like they can put a block on your rego if they suspect your car is modified, and they dont even have to pull you up apparently.
But, if your car is legal and roadworthy and not modified, you shouldnt have a problem.
I can still count the amount of times i've been done on 1 hand surprisingly.
1. Speeding, and they couldnt prove it, so they ordered a full inspection because they suspected my car was modified.
2. Bald tyres.
3. Window tint
4. Leaky injector pump.
5. Bald tyres and excessive noise.

Got defected because my aftermarket rim fell off. Now that would be fair if I hadn't demonstrated to the copper how the studs had pulled through the alloy rim and hadn't watched as I re-fitted the original rims with the original studs.
He then informed me that "I am no mechanic but I'm concerned that the (factory) studs will also pull through the (factory)rims".
So, after admitting that he was "not a mechanic" and therefore not trained or qualified to make judgements on the mechanical status of a motor vehicle he thus proceed to utilise his ignorance to issue a defect.
By the way.... the car later passed over the pits with compliments from the inspectors on it's condition.

I think your on the money Tim. THey are definately cracking down but the ones that are swearing and shit seem to be the brand new cops with no stripes at all so fresh from the accademy and just throwing there weight around. The attitude i got was not needed and that is the complaint i made.

Yeah i know they can do it man. That is the worst part being that they can defect you if they suspect something with your vehicle. So realisticaly they can defect a brand spankin VE commo off the show room floor if they so please. It is crap and i beliece that it needs to be changed. Its just a bullshit inconvenience having to go get it off. I really think it will pass so i am not worried but we shall see today i guess.

now that i think about it, there is a black one which to coppers looks like yours, the exhaust on it is fucking shocking almost hitting the ground and both back tyres are bald. I haven't been defected yet (touch wood), but I'm waiting for the day when I get pulled up in the GT-Four. I've been told that having open vents in the bonnet is not approved, even though it's a stock bonnet. Plus most people would assume that it's got an aftermarket bonnet and wing.

Got pulled up at an RBT years ago and my window was cracked, they just suggested i get it fixed asap as it can deteriate quickly in our weather and be a dangerous hazard whilst i drive... he wished me luck and off i went!
I've been in a car that got defected for the wiring being 'messy' (i think that was the word the cop used!) it was showing from under the dash but it was bundled up neatly with cable ties.....

When i had the VH on the road, i was pulled over because my right hand indicator and brake lights were doing weird stuff. the indicator would glow when i was braking, and the brake light would flash when indicating. I'd fixed it once but it decided to stop working again while there was a police car behind me. He let me off on the proviso that I see an auto electrician asap.
Also in the VH, I let the youth group at church mural all over it the weekend before i stripped it for painting. Was driving home and got pulled over outside my house. I explained what had happened and officer said that he goes to another church and that if any one else pulled me over to mention his name. Got pulled over later that night on the way home from the drags, but it was all good. I think the white walls stood out too much.

The funny thing was, he bought it like that. He should have checked it and got it changed over right away... Now he is going to get raped when getting it inspected. Yes i know him.
On Topic: Got pulled up the other day for an RBT, Cops decided to check out my car, they decided the exhaust was ok (still stock from cat-back). But they were a bit worried about the stretched tyres on the rear. They let me off as i was very polite, and it will have to go over the pits when i put it into nt rego.
I never have trouble with the police. As a few other have said, a lot of the time it is about attitude. Im sure i will get defected one day, but hey its probably going to be for a reason anyways.
Best pic of the rears i got atm.

Zac
PS What is the legality of stretched tyres? Old plates as well.
mitch_r32
Jan 27 2009, 10:42 PM
All tyre stores have a little book that comes from the tyre manufacturer about what size can go on what size rim.
As far as the MVR is concerned it follows whatever book corresponds to the brand of tyre on the car.
Also noticed spacers are not illegal in the NT
http://www.nt.gov.au/transport/mvr/vehicle...ht-vehicles.pdfI would recommend that people bookmark this and probably even print it out, its helped me when im worried about certain mods and the MVR
beohbe
Jan 27 2009, 10:51 PM
with the spacers it would be a matter of whether the vehicles track had been increased too much.
mitch_r32
Jan 27 2009, 10:59 PM
*goes back to reading standards for track width %*
Edit:
Reason for rejection
a) The vehicle manufacturer's specified wheel track measurement for the vehicle is
exceeded by more than is currently approved as per the National Code of Practice
for Light Vehicle Construction and Modification (Vehicle Standards Bulletin VSB
14) or as specified by the TAC.
Have to find this document now

Here it is

beohbe
Jan 27 2009, 11:01 PM
section 4.3.......no figure there, but by the ADR you cannot increase track by more than an inch (probably without other approved modifications). It states that ANY aftermarket wheel that is not of the size on the wheel/tyre placard needs to be TAC approved. This reminds me I have to contact MVR and TAC as I have removed my brembo's and coil-overs....
mitch_r32
Jan 27 2009, 11:02 PM
I'll have to read but in VIC you are allowed 1 inch over factory for rim size, hence a demand for SS commodore placards for non-ss commodore owners
Zmit
Jan 27 2009, 11:10 PM
ok... thats pretty crap...
its 1 inch in NSW as well...
are you saying that NT is more strict than down south in regards to wheels?!
OT: i was defected for smashed headlights....
funny that.... my bonnet was bent too.
they gave me a week before it came into effect though.

Before i brought my car up here, from country SA, I got done for:
exhaust too loud
bald tyres
only had one parking light
seat rails not tight enough
those padded things on your seat belt
while he was writing the notice out i got the toolbox out and tightened seat rails, and took pads of belts. Still got defected for them.
so the day after i put a spare parker light on, and went back to the police station( there was no MVR or alike for 300km) and told them that no tyre shop around had my tyre size and that i was trucking it to NT in 2 days. He tested my exhaust and it read fine, he said that the tyres were fine, and that the rest was ok.
Funny thing - officer that did the check was the same one that defected me.
Since moving to NT, never got pulled over.
mitch_r32
Jan 27 2009, 11:17 PM
No, NT is much more lax compared to NSW or VIC.
This: Fitting of wheel spacers (or adaptors for dual wheel conversions) between the wheel mounting face and the road wheel is not allowed unless fitted as original equipment by the vehicle manufacturer.
Zmit
Jan 27 2009, 11:58 PM
ok. ill be a little more specific....
are they more strict than down south on wheel SIZE?

mitch_r32
Jan 28 2009, 12:01 AM
No.
Cops down there have much bigger problems than the thousands of mildly modded cars that don't cause any trouble at all

My car has never had so much attention in its life until it got up here, I was even asked how often I got pulled up in Victoria! when I said "never been pulled up until now" I don't think he believed me
