So looking to upgrade my camera,

looking into a d200, i know theyre not in production anymore, so would be secondhand.

but just wondering if it would be better to find something new and buy a camera new or not?

i was on a similar dilemma myself a few weeks ago, when all things were concidered, and i mean ALL THINGS, the D90 is a much much better camera than the D200.

honestly dont think twice if you have around 1500 mark to spend. but if you cant save up that much and your gona get a second hand D200, they go for about 800-1100 on ebay depending on acusations and accessories. and the D90 brand new goes for about $1400-1500. thats what id save up for and buy
Oscar
so the d90 is a much better camera then?
becuse yeh, that was what i was looking at over the d200.

and ive heard good thing about the d90, just that at the moment i havnt got much $$ to spend, would love the d90 though.

yea mate the D90 is a way better camera, its based on the D300 you know, its just got a few less features.

I just googled d90 vs d200 and this dude has a pretty good way of putting it down to that thread's OT. Don't pay attention to the chatter about the OT's D80 but the reasons between choosing the two.

Neither the D90 nor D200 will solve your AF concerns. They'll basically share the same AF system as your current D80 that is letting you down as you suggest at times. Given that, I'd try hard to save up for the D300, whose AF system is light years ahead for tough subjects or sports.

For high ISO, the D90 will no doubt be superior, based on the excellent D300's high ISO performance. So that may solve the other concern. However, so will the D300, and fix problem #1 along the way too.

Honestly, between the D200 and D90 it's fairly simple... a little better build and control layout versus a newer processor, better high ISO (although I suppose some will make the argument it remains to be seen... I disagree... it's based on the D300 in many ways, and check Nikon's recent track record), better LCD, and a few new tweaks like live view and video. Seems to me the D90 is the more up to date option, despite the D200's excellent build. You never claimed the D80 wasn't built well enough.

Having never handled a Nikon apart from a D200, I must say it was actually quite impressive over the 40D. Different layout etc.. but it just felt that little bit more substantial and felt better in my hands and against my face. Although I don't know which I would've bought having been fairly impressed by the 40D and going for that, side-by-side I think they're both awesome cameras and any amateur should be pleased owning one (I know I am).

As long as you can grab a D200 which hasn't taken a ton of photo's and the price is right the they are a great camera. The only drawbacks are bad batteries, the D200 chews them up heaps so you will have to charge them a lot but meh thats why they are rechargeable and at high ISO it's not very good and you will get pretty damn grainy photo's. On the plus side they are built like a tank I've dropped mine on concrete twice and nothings wrong it. The auto focus is fine and has decent FPS and the feel and layout of the camera is awesome. I don't know jack about the new Nikon's hell i didn't even know there was a D90 so i can't really comment on the newer one's just try and find the camera's you are looking at getting and try them out doing some test shots and see how they feel.

im going into town tomorrow and taking a look at a d90 to see what i think.
as for buying a secondhand camera, roughly how many photos taken would be too many?
i never really shoot at high ISO's cuz with the d40x its not great, and with the d90 you get the newer technology, im in no real hurry to make a descision, as i want to make the right one, and have a camera that im happy with.

Depends on what the shutter-life is rated at. THe 40D is 150,000 cycles, and I think they're all that apart from pro-spec cameras like the Nikon D3 and the Canon 1D/Ds are 300,000. I'd say a lightly used camera would be in the 5000-10,000 actuations in 12 months?

oh well, i jus saw a d200 go with about 1000 in the past year, only went for about 700 too, id say that would have been an alright pick up

Well I got a 40D shutter reader and I've done 10,000+ in about 10 months.

I checked my D200 when i had owned it for 12months and it was at like 90,000ish. I have no idea what it is up to now.

i think you should get a Sony A300, i have one, very very very good camera for it's price, but it takes a bit of working out to use all its nice little features biggrin.gif

Going that way the hinges on the shutter will fall off in 2 years!

I googled it. Download THIS and paste the exe into your EOS utils folder, plug your camera in, run the EXE and close the EOS program if it starts, then click get numbers or whatever it is.

already got other nikon gear though

at the moment it looks like im leaning towards the d90, i havnt had the opportunity to hold one yet, the shop in the city was out, and apparently 1600 body only, but the shop tends to charge a little more than all the others, will try again this weekend at another place, hopefully will have some luck there.

Yeah why not, built around the same systems as the d300 so it's gotta be decent.

I don't think you need the EOS util, it just - if it starts, close it.

Why do you want to shoot tethered? I've had a muck about and it's pretty cool but I couldn't leave my laptop and camera out anywhere to do time delay shot or anything..
