They're designed for use in the 'Safe Streets' CBD policing initiative. They're designed to stand out and increase the visible police presence as part of curbing the weekend alcohol related violence. Or as per the comments by the Assistant Commissioner;

“The idea of going to the Hummers is that it’s about trying to measure visible impact so we’ve got to try to introduce something which might look different to our current fleet of vehicles. We want to be visibly seen and we want to make sure the police out on the streets are recognisable and that we do reassure the public that we’re there.” Asst Commissioner Gary Jamieson said

They're on loan from GM anyway, so what can they do that Territories can't? Be free.

Valid point Rookie but i doubt all the fuel they go through is "on loan". I'm no Greenpeace warrior but a hummer because they want to "Stand out" Smart cars stand out don't they? Probably go faster than hummers too...

With all those pretty stickers and flashing lights they should be selling ice creams

Reading the stats on them, they're not that bad on fuel, especially in comparison to other 4WDs. Don't forget they're only a 5 cylinder. Regardless, $250k offset makes a difference.

And when you can figure out how to fit five officers and gear into a Smart car, let me know.

Thats why the call them the "smart" car.. they are amazing tongue.gif

Fair enough but i really don't think these cars will give police the image that they really want.

I know the fuel economy of a H3 is actually not that bad in comparison.. but only know that from research.

The stereotype is that hummers guzzle and when the general public see these things in the city they are not going to think "Oh wow that really stands out i'm sure no one would be breaking the law now" they are going to go with the whole "What a waste of taxpayers money"

Rookie ROX
Keeping in mind of course that the majority of people seeing them are going to be plastered.

Ultimately all they want is for people to know they're there as part of the attempt to reduce alcohol-fueled violence on weekend nights.

Not a bad idea, if in fact they do prove 'free' long term. Not a ruse to create a fleet in the near future.
