Hey guys, I'm planning on guying myself a dslr camera for general use and am a little lost in all the jazz around the shops.
Asking shop assistants for help is of no use as most of them try to unload their outdated models :-(

I'm pretty well new to the SLR scene so I'm after something around the 600-1000 mark that is pretty well bang-for-buck for everyday use.

Any help would be great.

Cheers.

Could almost get a 2nd hand 40D for that. definitely a 400D with the twins kit 2nd hand unless you want warranty, then the 1000D fosho.

Cheers guys. I was actually looking at reviews of the 1000d this morning and it certainly seems to be a popular camera.
Just for comparison sakes is there anything else with similar features in that price range?

I'd be buying a 400D or 40D second hand if I was in your position... Try and get one where you can get the sellers warrenty (if it hasnt run out as yet)

If you want warenty and all that; Best bet is to buy the Canon 1000D or if your a Nikon fan then the D60.

With Canon 1000D’s performance, especially when you see the output of the photo taken in high ISO. Canon handles noise much better than Nikon D60. However, the issue that they have with 450D (bigger sibling of 1000D) which is underexposure of daylight snaps still can be seen in 1000D. I suspect it is just a firmware issue; pretty sure you can get a fix for it now. Whereas for Nikon D60, daylight shootings are great; sharp and vivid.

I only just asked myself the same question. This is 'My' opinion, so im not stirring.. After many weeks of research, i just purchased a Nikon D60.. I found, the Canon 1000D to be not quite as good as the Nikon.. I found in all situations i had an oppourtunity to test in, The D60 was easier to use and took a superior photo (Day or Night)..

So whichever you choose to purchase, you'll be buying an excellent camera. I just found the D60 to be alittle more excellent..

Good luck

Spend another $700 and get a Nikon D90... Unless you have a Video Camera... This puppy does both digital Still's and HD (720p) Video!! Not bad for around the $1700 mark if you ask me... Nikon's shit on Canons... But im just trying to stir shit... ph34r.gif

Cheers all for the comments/advice.
I'm leaning towards the 1000D at the moment. As some of you have already said, the 400D/40D is a much better unit but seems a little off my budget :-(
Further to that, I think both HN and Myers are having a sale atm where the 1000D is going for ~$900 with a dual lense kit :-)

Good idea!

With the dude above, D60 with the twin lense kit.

Basically D80 Guts inside a little body, takes amazingly crisp photos with the kit lenses, I paid $879 with Twin VR kit lense and 4gb 20mb/s card.

Do some calling around, haggle with shops, you should get them down abit.

The thing that I don't like about the D60, is lack of AF motor in the camera, lenses are abit dearer but the only lense you'll be needing is a macro lense if you want to do other fancy stuff, the other lenses are better then fine so don't let that put you off.

Nice google skills Dan, where did you find that copypasta from? mamoru.gif

If i were you id just be sticking to a 1000D, or possibly a 450D twin kit, but if thats out of your budget then 1000D will suffice for what you need!

Then if you want to take nicer photos, upgrade your lenses then when you feel the body is holding you back upgrade to something better!

If you don't mind me asking...where abouts did you find the D60 with the kit lenses and memory card for $879?
