The factory turbocharged engine was FWD/AWD only, takes a bit of work to get it RWD.

Oh sorry, was thinking of the next model Celia (the 86' FWD model)

Hey guys. I have just bought a 1981 RA40 lift back, and I am regretting it. Since I can't take it back, I have to make the best out of a bad situation. It looks like a cockroach for starters, so I'm wondering how much you can modify the body of a car until the engineer/Queensland Transport tells me to go to the proverbial. To anyone who knows what the old liftbacks look like, I am thinking of taking the back door off it, so I can make a Ferrari look-alike fiberglass back on it (You know the fins that come back, with the flat boot.) So simply, I want the back of it to look like the back of an MR2. Also, it has a pig of an engine in it, the wonderful 18-RU. I have heard that the 1G-GTE, 1G-GE, 1G-GU, etc fits in it nicely. However, I have no experience with engines of any kind, but I am working on it. So does anyone know if there is much work involved (I am only worried about the electrics really)? So if you aren't busy, give me your thoughts on the matter.

Quite a bit of work, RA40s are carby'd and all those engines you posted are EFI. It's not impossible, but a bit hard if you don't know what you're doing.

That's pretty decent, I guess - you going to pull it down before you install it? If you treat them right and tune them well, those engines are capable of some pretty impressive power figures.

I know a guy doing a stroker kit for your engine, new rods, custom pistons, custom crank, etc. Not cheap, but the way to go if you're chasing some huge power figures.

orgasm, simplest upgrade for ra40 is 18rg twin carb. bolt it onto existing mounts/box, new top radiator hose, shorten the throttle arm to driver's side, bolt pacemaker extractors onto existing exhaust then drive it. more than double your power. only hard part - finding 18rg! or find just head n timing case n extra timing chain n convert 18r to twin cam.
1g love, 3tgte bolt straight in as it was a factory option in late ta63 celicas. just gotta change from w series to t series box (which i presume u got wit 1g) n from memory if its already efi 22r then fuel lines match up. big figures from little cheap common block.
just some food for thought...
