You'd want a basic ballhead, a 3 way tilt/pan head on a monopod is a tad silly as they're not really much good for minor adjustments, just move the monopod instead!

However, I have read that a number of the BIG fashion photogs (that shoot Mamiya's and 'Blads) are alway's rockin a monopod, probably cause the camera's are so heavy and they have to hold them for hours at a time.

That's actually funny that the Manfrotto DOESN'T come with even the simplest ballhead! My Slik Lightypod III comes with their most basic ballhead and is only $50.

I'd recommend a basic ballhead, one with a QR if you intend to work on and off the monopod through the day.

Static car shots - no monopod, no tripod unless using slower shutter

Monopod head - best is the manfrotto tilt only head, converted to suit RRS clamp and plate setup.

Depends on what side of the argument you stand, some people say without a support you can NEVER have the sharpest image and others say as long as you do the focal length by shutter speed it's as sharp as it will be support regardless.

I think plates (like the RRS you said there) are a little like putting floaties on a boat.. the 'flop' isn't that big of a deal.. It's just getting lazy tongue.gif

I always use a tripod for static tongue.gif unless at the track...

the best monopod setup i saw was a dude at oran park with a 400mm f2.8 it had like a video camera ball head that was so loose you would still have to support alot of the weight... but it really helped with freedom. I think this is esential because you never pan on a perfect horzontial axis...

Or you could not be a pussy and handhold it tongue.gif

Yeah a pan-only head would be good. It may be a pussy thing to do but he may also have got some mad shots ergo, pussy = good (as it should).

nah it needs to move vetrically aswell so you can pan on diagonals.

Im just stiring about the handheld thing tongue.gif what every works for an indivduals is what they should go with.

Diagonals are overrated, that's what Einstein said anyway..

Matt, that's a tripod with a 'wimberley' head.. Expensive and usually only used by birders.

Tripods and motorsport don't usually mix real efficiently.

Nick, 1/1000s shutter, tripod and handheld. you're not going to be able to tell the difference in a static shot.. Hell, even at 1/125 you won't... unless you got a shakey hand or something?
matt mead
can u put that head on a monopod but
Kyl3
Wimberly? Fuck no it just wouldn't work!

It's rediculous for motorsport matt, too clumsy. You'll still miss a lot of action like crashes and stuff...
matt mead
yeah it looks over kill... but i would want something like that for freedom... im sure there are simpler design out there and cheaper as well lol
