BRETT STEVENS RETIRES
The biggest name in Australian Drag Racing, Brett Stevens, today announced he will retire from full time race driving and cease operating his team at the end of 2008 after a long and highly decorated career.

Stevens, 43, leaves the sport as one of the most successful and influential professional racers in it’s history. Over a career spanning 18 years, he has multiple National Championships, World Records, National Records and Strip Records to his and his team’s name.

In addition to his on-track presence, Stevens also single-handedly changed the face of the sport with his new levels of showmanship and professionalism off the track that have helped make him into an Australian motorsport icon.

Stevens said that the decision had been an extremely difficult one to make.

“This is one of the biggest decisions of my life and it has not come easily. I’ve put a lot of thought into it and for those that know me and my passion for the sport, my fans, my team and my sponsors would know how difficult this has been.”

“I am extremely proud of what I have accomplished as a professional racer and I am at the point of my career where I am at the top. Retirement is not something that I have considered until recently however I have always promised myself that if I wasn’t enjoying myself and the challenges that the sport presented I would step aside.”

“Over many years I have also been the subject of many malicious and false rumour and innuendo, including personal attacks and threats on myself, my family, employees and sponsors which are taking an unprecedented toll on both my personal and professional wellbeing.”

“I have made a decision now though to look to the future for both myself and my family, and while this decision ends one phase of my career, I’m confident it will also open doors to many new opportunities.”

“I have made some fantastic lifelong friendships throughout my career in motorsport and I want to thank everyone who has accompanied, supported and inspired me over the years, including my fans, sponsors and crew. Above all, a special thanks goes to my wife Kath and my daughter Skye, who have given me the strength to do what I have done.”

Operating at the elite levels of the sport, in 2008 Stevens commanded the largest motorsport team in the country and the largest Drag Racing team anywhere in the world with 10 Group One vehicles. He is also the only person in the world to compete in three professional Drag Racing brackets simultaneously; Top Bike, Top Doorslammer and Top Alcohol.

A motor mechanic by trade, Stevens began his long and successful career as a drag racer in 1990 when he travelled to the United States and purchased his first Nitro Harley Top Fuel Motorcycle from good friend and Drag Racing legend, the late Jim McClure.

In 1993 his team first became known as Jack Daniel’s Racing in a relationship that still stands today lasting 15 years. Over that time Stevens developed one of the most feared reputations on the drag strip for his racing innovations and skills on both 2 and 4 wheels.

As well as a plethora of achievements within the sport, he has also been anointed with the Australian Sports Medal for his contributions to motorsport as well as being an inaugural inductee into the Australian Motorcycle Hall of Fame.

In 29 National Championships contested across 3 professional race brackets spanning his illustrious career, Stevens never finished outside the top 6 with 3 National Championships, 8 runner ups, 7 third places, 6 fourth places, 3 fifth places and 2 sixth places to his name. He also made an incredible 70 Final Round appearances.

Stevens also devotes a lot of his time and resources to charity involvements including the Kids with Cancer Foundation and the Leukaemia Foundation of which he is an Official Patron.

hopefully Jack Daniels see's the light and now sponsors a GM door slammer team.....

if you can call something with a carbon fibre body and chromoly chasis a GM...or a ford for that matter biggrin.gif

Word on the Mopar forums is that he smacked a JD rep and lost his sponsership.. personally I couldn't care less, just cause your good at what you do doesn't give you the right to behave like a complete tosser.

one of the stories I was told was that he was at a Mack trucks Jack Daniels function and he was drunk and riding around on his goped being very obnoxious as he does and A Jack Daniels rep tried to get him to start behaving but got a smack in the mouth instead. When the president of Jack daniels heard about this he imediately ended his companies association with brat stevens. Apparently Perkins engineering reps were their as well and it was initially thought it was one of them who assaulted the Jack Daniels rep but that was quickly cleared up and they may be the biggest beneficiary of all of this.

what did he do?? dunno.gif

Personally i have found nothing wrong with him... have been to his house (even took me whole family!! mamoru.gif ) and he was nothing more than accomodating whilst we were there... We've travelled on the plane together and again nothing wrong... He's been good to Ben and I and assisting us with our car 'troubles' and overall personally he's not been a problem to us...

Like alot of things though i guess once your at the top of your game - there is always added stress and pressure and with this you make mistakes along the way, people will always be there to knock you down or help you fall down yourself without helping you up.. But until the TRUTH emerges from Brett i for one am not going to listen to the rumours... did this last time with the Victor incident then was told personally by Victor and Ben the truth which was so far from what i had been told by many people it wasnt funny! And besides he might not be the only Top Doorslammer team to pack up and leave next year!!

Overall i think it will be a huge loss to the world of drag racing, not to mention the huge work he does for Summernats and im sure other 'motorsport' events around Aus...

I like the way this man thinks. Will prob happen though
spyder6052
victor bray taken him on board to drive one of his cars
frcefed
not exactly taken on board , he pays to drive the car cause he cant afoord to transport his all over the country and his car is not legal to run T/D

and as for stevens , good riddance was destroying the sport with his childish shit , last time i saw him race at WSID reid had a big accident in T/F and quailifing got shut down with out him having his last run so he turned around to the officails and threatened to pack up his ball and go home unless he got his run cause he wasnt in the field , they had no choice.
Cobraed
latest story doing the rounds is that he was arrested on the weekend and will probabbly be doing some time in the lockup. their is also rumors of another big name in drag racing about to end. time will tell so watch this space

This was actualloy fairly old news and there is still some more to come reguarding a large team about to fold and it is not Aaron Lynch as his biggest problem was getting paid employees to prepare his fleet of cars to race had anough and said stop sell it all and sit back. at least that is what I was told anyway

I hope the brick didnt hurt to much on the way out.

This was actualloy fairly old news and there is still some more to come reguarding a large team about to fold and it is not Aaron Lynch as his biggest problem was getting paid employees to prepare his fleet of cars to race had anough and said stop sell it all and sit back. at least that is what I was told anyway

next you're going to tell us this person runs edge signage

gee and you were all involved in the investigation and the arrest of this bloke now weren't you! head_wall.gif head_wall.gif

perhaps mouths and personal attacks should be kept to ones self until his court appearance and the truth of the story emerges!

And DONT even bring your fuck'd up attitude about HVDRA into this Lars! How the bloody hell (like anyone else who is in shock about this news today) we were to know what goes on behind closed doors! We do not select our entertainment choices based on a fuckn drug piss test! Are you 1000% sure no one in the sport compact arena is doing drugs! NO DIDNT THINK SO!

HVDRA chose Brett for his Drag Racing talent and ability to put on a good show for the crwod! END OF STORY!

someones not a happy jan to hear this is she.
I dont think any of his or any other racers outside activities should have any impact on tracks or facilities who have used their services but it does bring a dark shadow on the whole sport. I wonder how V8 supercars and summernats bosses are feeling about this.

I've been monitoring this thread, glad to see someone still showing support until proven otherwise. Brett is a client of my workplace, hes a good guy. His racing was also sponsered so yeah.Lets just not jump to conclusions too quickly from what the 'media' says, it is the media after all
