if u getting started u can probably pick up an old 350d or 400d for around the 700 mark maybe less with a few lenses, other than that u got the 1000D which is just under a grand or just over pending on the lenses,
and the 450d which is just over a grand and more depends on lenses

I have my 400D with an 18-55mm lens and battery grip with all needed accessories for sale for $600. Its an awesome camera and it helped me get into photography as my first DSLR.
You should buy it

do it
just take as many pictures as you can (make them the best you can do)
put them on sites like www.deviantart.com or this one and get people to critique them
search the internet for imformation about ISO and apeture and all that stuff
try and find someone who has been shooting for years or a pro and ask to go shooting with them/ be there assistant and watch the way they take there shots what how they will set it up and than apply those skills to your photography.
The best way to learn something is by doing it. so just go out there and take as many pics as possible

What ever you do DON'T get a sony a350.. My parents decided to go buy a camera without me and totally disregard all my advice.. Now i'm stuck with this noob camera.. You have to trick it into changing the Shutter speed without changing the appature.. its frustrating as fuck and i hate it!.... The auto functions are good but whats the fun in that?
