What's the difference between a 50mm f/1.8 and a 50mm f/1.4?
Obviously the fstop, but what does that mean in terms of potrait photography?
The 1.8 = $120
The 1.4 = $700
Am I going to notice a huge difference, or is it only subtle?

the F1.4 is faster I think, with abit more bokeh, not much I don't think. The 1.4 from what i've read is abit sharper to, but im not sure if it's worth the extra cash.

i wouldnt bother. id just go the 1.8, only because there is minimal gains in sharpness and what not, but you pay an extra $400!!!
1.8 id think would be more than sufficent.
also where have you seen it for 120???

You say that. Wait till you drop a 1.8 lens Vs that 1.4 lens

.
If I had the money and was asking the question, I know what I would do.
I dont see many pro's shooting a portrait session with a 50 f/1.8.
Mmmm 50 f/1.2

I gorged out and sold my f/1.8 for a f/1.4 not too long ago, the difference is noticeable, it was the Autofocus on the old f/1.8 which annoyed me, I don't know if mine was just on the way out so when I did make the switch the AF is much faster and much more precise (USM obviously). Results wise it's not that much sharper when printing at 4x6 but gives a much nicer colour range

if you dont know the differance you probly wont really appreciate the differance.
wider aperture (smaller number) lets more light into the camera allowing for faster shutter speeds and usually better 'bokeh' (you know, that awesome out-of-focus section.... on a more expensive lens it is usually a lot smother).
in terms of portrait photos; you will be able to issolate your subject more, although i personally dont think the differance would be that much.
(that said, i have not used either lens...)

build quality is another thing to consider, the 1.8 is such a shit quality build, but still a fun little lens, i do like it alot!
Every canon owner should have one.
