dodgy coilpack. arcing on the block , instead of going to the plug?

yeah, coilpacks man... very common
pull them out, cover them in electrical tape and you will be sweet for a while!

Just be careful that its not detonation as you will fry your pistons.
Just drop in to Tas Mobile mechanics as they are very switched on with imports.
Dan.

Any 33 (rb25 not 26) with high boost on stock managament (im assuming you have) mainly above 12psi, will send the ecu in rich and retard mode. Dodgy coil packs could be to blame, try dropping the boost down a little, if it fixes it its the ecu and not coil packs

where they at? was going to go to howels but they seem heaps busy.

yer i have droped the boost down, it wasnt that high to start with and its only running .5bar now and still doing it. weird one a????

Howells= dodgy
R33 ecu's are a kent at the best of times, if the boost is down now, and stilll doing it, the list is as long as your arm really

i have wound it down dude.
anywasy thanks guys will have to bite the bullet and take it to get looked at.

what kind of gap you running on your spark plugs? i know my rb20 did the same thing and it was a spark plug issue when we thought it was a coilpack problem.

Aug 18 2008, 10:51 PM
check fuel pump aswell, could possibly be fuel pump on the way out
Juddie
Aug 18 2008, 11:00 PM
its back to stock boost, so gap shouldnt be an issue, agreeing with delazy on this one

it could be your fuel pressure reg its rare but i have seen it

I'd say coilpacks first, theres something on SAU about fixing that up with high temp silicon. I tried to search, but I seem to be having issues with that on the site atm. You can apparently check it of a night with the cover off, you will see the arcing.
But as said, it could be fuel pump or sparkplugs.
I dont think it's R&R mode as that just gives a flat spot in your rev range around 3500-5000 revs... I'm loving this at the moment I can tell you! lol

R&R mode?
mine wont ev past 3-4G in nutral

Rich and Retarded
Ecu see's too much air going in and richens the fuel mix and retards the timing to compensate... I think thats the go anyway
What have you done to yours Nichy? R33?

Just a flat spot............... Doubt that very much, caught mine doing it on the dyno, knocked a full 25deg timing out and lost 40rwkw!!!!

Yeah it does come as a flat spot and not a cough and splatter type effect. That's why i couldn't understand why you were blaming the ECU for the engine coughing and spluttering...
It is a very very common problem with the Series 1 R33 that the coil packs "crack" and arch out, yes there is a temporary fix with silicone spray or electrical tape but this is only temporary.
The price you can get splitfire coils for these days it's silly to waste your time. I could run 20psi on stock ecu (not remapped) with just an SAFCII and Splitfire coils. Before you say anything i know the SAFC tricks the computer into thinking it's a different A/F ratio but my car was still spluttering with just the SAFC and continued to do so until i replace the coils.

nar i have a 180sx SR20
bigger turbo.. z32 AFM .. injectors and power FC...
last i was driving it in gear it would take off fine get onto about 10psi of boost( running 17 ) then just start to cough and splutter... and then in nutral it gets upto about 3-4 G and acts kinda like a limiter but yeh just shit noises and stuff...
and i know its running rich cuz my rear bar was white... now alot darker hahah
but yeh i got no idea:S

Oh, I guess summers must be wrong then
Bottom line is, it will do it, been there twice with 2 different rb25 engines

yer ive orded new splitfire coils, just have to wait till they turn up. It still drives just fine but sometimes when boost hits it will splatter and cough and if i keep on the gas it will drive out. lol
so i will just have to wait until they turn up and try that.
cheers for all the help guys.

this sounds just like what was happening with my mates rb20det, turned out to be just spark plug gap......plug gap was about 1.6mm should have been around 0.8mm ......fixed the problem straight away......be worth checking anyway

.8 mate. the ones in it were working fine but like i said i thought i would change them to see if it was the plugs

i hade the same issue i used to own the blue gtr that m3ance now owns did it on low and high boost heaps i look at it this way what happens when you blow air at a candle it goes out. drop the plug gap gives you a stronger spark stops boost blowing the spark out gap to .8 will make heaps of differnce coil packs problems ussaly become evedent when hot .
