if i make a cage is there rules on positioning of bars? any info will be appreciated. i want to make some to the proper standards. NOT HALF ASSED.

Mate i work for a company that makes ROPS equiptment sorta like a roll cage, and apart from suggesting that you looks on the cams website for exact ruleings, i can tell you that our LH8 &LK8 mods ( which are similar to cams approval ) state the following.

all piping must be bent in CDS ( COLD DRAWN SEAMLESS ) tubing with a BEND RADIUS equal to or more than 4D ( 4 times the diameter ) of the tubeing, Also there is strict ruling on head clearance for all passengers in said vehicle with all pipe work within 150mm of person to be paded. All mounting points must have a suface area of equal to or more than 200mm and have a underneath sandwitch plate to match top plate. ALL bolts must be of a tensile strength to match 8.8 or higher with high tensile washers and nylocks nuts.

So i would recommend not to do it yourself and get a pro to do it.

For Queensland Transport Approval

* Pipe size for roll cage can be made out of Chrome moly (unsure on steel grade category) Min 45mm diameter unsure on wall thickness sorry, or Mild steel min 51mm diameter and min 3mm wall ( I personaly use 4mm wall)
* For a 4 point cage (ONE MAIN BAR AND TWO REAR SUPPORT ARMS) Main center bar to be "legal" must have mounting plates min size 150x200mm to be welded into chassis and or floor pan. ( reccommend you see an engineer or boiler maker ect on where to weld ect you can just put the plate anywhere) Then the centre bar must be welded in to place making sure that pipe is a decent distance away from head in normal driving position, (i roughly work on approx 200mm away from head) Specs for rear cage arms if you will still be using the rear seats, the bends for the back window must not exceed 35 degress, after the bend the pipe must continue through the rear parcel tray to the boot floor with no more bends !!!!! (You will get the book thrown at you if you do !! ) *NOTE* I have seen people put plates on the rear arms at the parcel tray and drilled it to parcel tray and then made a second section to go from under parcel tray to boot floor. I dont know if doing hat is legal !!! ( Hope that made sense to you ! )

*6 point cages all door intrusin bars must be fully removable.

*6 point cages Front over bars must not intrude on drivers sight. ( I normaly sit in drivers seat and line them up with the door\roof pillars. Front over bars must not me in the "major driver impact area"

GENERAL

Welds must either be TIG welder or MIG ( With a QUALIFIED OPERATOR )
ALL BARS ON ROLL CAGE MUST BE PADDED (WOULD RECOMMEND PADDING ABOUT MIN 1 INCH WALL HI DENISITY WALL) Just remember if you in a serious akka a roll cage bar coming for your head is like a butter knife hitting an EGG !!!

Drop tanks no major specs just keep to your 100mm road clearence rule AND LOTS OF BAFFELS.. lol

i live in a very remote country town, although i am building my r33 in the shed
its time for me to get a cage
i have a few questions, i cant weld, but i still want a decent cage, that will help extend my life expectancy and be fapable.
the car is TRACK USE ONLY it wont see the road, other then from on a trailer so thats all good.
now, can you make a cage from only straight bits of tube? or does it actually need to be bent?
and possibly the better option, are there any cage kits that can be shipped right to my door that are bolt in, remember im no welder. the car is completly stripped so i am taking this oppotunity to make the cage.

Interesting point too, CAMS doesn't like your helmet to be higher than the cage. You need to be a certain depth below (I can't remember off the top of my head) the top of the cage.

Important for those running cages in open tops (like myself).

The main hoop needs to be 1 piece, therefore bent like a big U. The legs going forward from the main hoop need to also be 1 piece, therefore bent. If CAMS is your thing, download their rule book from www.cams.com.au. They have a fairly in-depth chapter covering cages. If ANDRA is where you want to be, then buy the rule book for $25.
To answer your questions - no you can't build a cage out of straight pieces only. There are bolt in kits available - Bonds Roll Bars is 1 I've heard of. There is typically some welding involved though to fit all the pieces together. Everywhere you put a bolt through needs to be re-inforced, therefore welding. And with the bolt in style, I'm pretty sure the diagonal in the main hoop has to be welded.
I just put a CAMS & ANDRA approved cage in my ute.
Bought a kit from Andrews Race Cars in Sydney. Cost $900 delivered to Brisbane. I spent a fair bit of time fitting it to the car and justed tacked all the pieces together. Then I had a professional weld it for me. I just had the car tech inspected for ANDRA, and it was passed.
I believe that a welded cage will be more structurally sound than a bolt together design. Have a chat to a local exhaust shop. Ask them if they TIG weld. If yes, then they may be capable enough to do the welding for you.

Bond Roll bars in Sydney do great cages and are compliant with the rules

I've heard nothing but good reviews about Bonds and will be heading their way early next year.

I do have a question though. What are the legal requirements in NSW for Roll Cages fitted to road registered cars? I've searched through the RTA website and can't find a thing. I see that QLD has a rule about door bars being removable and that seems logical but i'd like to know for sure.
