Rip them straight to an ISO? If its only for backup (or at least, ready to be burnt to another DVD) ISO will be fine.
Also media players like the Popcorn Hour (not to mention VLC and other PC software) play directly from ISO so theyre fine in place of AVI etc.
EDIT: Meant to add that DVDDecrypter will rip a copy protected DVD to an ISO for backup purposes.

Just carry on using DVDShrink.
But get a program called DVD43, Which will hide any disc security whilst DVDShrink does its job.
If you want to do it easier, You could also acquire One Click DVD. That with DVD43 you can copy any DVD with only 1 click

CRC errors occur due to a damaged disc usually.

The only apps you need are:
MagicISO / DaemonTools
AnyDVD
CloneDVD
Ive been using these apps for years and they always work. CloneDVD can take a dual-layer DVD and compress it to single layer (4.7gb) as it rips to either an image or burn direct to disc. MagicISO, Daemon Tools, hell even PowerISO, UltraISO etc all have virtual drive managers if you want to keep the movies in ISO format, then u can just mount ur movie image to the virtual drive and access it like it was actually in the drive
