Here is a quick Tech on how to remove a fuel tank in a HQ.

The removal was prompted by my need to sort the leaning out issue int he HQ under heavey acceleration etc...

The reasoning we came to is that the pickup for the HQ originally is at the fornt of the tank towards the top, sometime in the past my tank has been modifed to include a new pick up at the front but this still wasnt sufficient to flow the fuel my engine needs.

So i decided i need to weld a sump tot he rear of the tank and put twin pickups at the rear this should go some way to solving my issues of course a new or 2nd pump will help as well which will come for now is the removal of the tank...[/b]

This is the tank as it sat very dirty but other then that pretty standard looking fuel tank

First step was to Jack the car up to a safe working height we used a jack under the Diff and two axel stands either side of the diff.

Another pick of the tank from underneath before we start.

The tank needed to be drained of the 101 octane prior to removal we used an esky to catch the fuel

This pic shows the pickup that my car had been using this ISNT the factory pickup it was a modified one but it still wasnt doing the job this will be welded up when the tank sump is added.

The pickup fuel line will have to be removed to drain the fuel

IPB Image

The clamp has been loosened and the fuel line can now be pulled off.

ahhh 101 octane whats $1.60 a Litre any ways.. tongue.gif

IPB Image

This is what my current pick up looks like

IPB Image

Now the tank is drained its time to undo the 2 metal straps holding the tank in place we used an air compressor to undo the bolts as they were on tight.

IPB Image

Once the straps are undone the tank can be gentley lifted out of the car

IPB Image

This is what the under car looks liek with no fuel tank.

IPB Image

Here you can see the two straps that were holding the tank in place we had to cut the fuel sender wire to remove the tank i will re solder this when the tank goes back in.

IPB Image

You can see in this pic the fuel sender plug and wire and the ORIGINAL fuel pickup! how that ever flowed enuff fuel i'll never know!!!

IPB Image

The tank out on the ground read to remove the fuel sender

IPB Image

Removing the fuel sender is a matter of simply twisting it and pulling out

IPB Image

The fuel sender unit looks like this.

IPB Image

A better pic of the ORIGINAL fuel pickup ohmy.gif

IPB Image

Another looks at where the tank usualy sits in this pic you can see my diff suspension and exhaust

IPB Image

This is the Tank completely out and drained of the last bit of fuel that was stuck in it

IPB Image

Another view of the pick up that was modified that still wasnt up to the task

JOB COMPLETE!

HUGE THANKS GOES OUT TO JOE! HE DID AN AWESOME JOB!!

Now the next step is to have a sump welded in and twin pick ups with -10 fittings welded on as well as a return line -6 fitting welded to the top near the sender plug.

The tank should look similar to this when done:
