Here are a few of my photos in no real order. Recently I've migrated from a Fujifilm S5500 (that most my stuff is from) to a Pentax K100D and even though the little Fuji was my friend I felt no nostalgia eBaying that sucker to get the K100D.

Thought I'd add these. Typical water shots but from my shower, getting a bit of practice in with the manual focus.

No one likes to comment.

Come on, there are some awesome photographers here, I need CC!
Lance
One thing is you need to lower your depth of feild, and use a lower f/stop or aperture, all the background seem in focus which to me is distracting.
Nick_
Yeah with the S5500, it was pretty much a P&S with a long zoom. Now I have active control over everything with the Pentax I like to get into the 'shallow depth of field' styles.
Nick_
Here are a few more I've dragged out.

which ones arn't very sharp? which ones have bad lines, you need to refer!

My fuji had a cheaters option where you could get a grid on the display and that was really good, pity I only found it like a week before I sold it, the K100D doesn't have that, as far as I know.
Nick_
T'was a little bored just before and felt like a beer so I decided to slap on my Nissin 32AF TTL flash and blast away a beer. Doesn't look too bad for a lamers attempt, shot in raw too which is only a new progression too.

Here some more from tonight.

[attachmentid=467682]

These next too have too much lens flare and would've probably worked out had I adjusted the aperture/shutter speed but I thought I'd put them on anyway, just don't look at the ugly street lights! ohmy.gif

Yeah I like it.. and after, I decapitated it and fed on it's insides.

Not bad for an old Ikea coffee table and a rental unit's bashed wall!

I was going to get around to that one day.. Just when is something I can't answer..

Here's one from a while ago, taken on my N95 (Nokia mobile phone). It's a little grainy even thought it's taken at ISO100 (the EXIF data is still attached). It was taken in Llew's home town, staring up a streetlight pole whilst he took his Post Office photos (view his gallery or his deviant art gallery).
Nick_
Here's some more from this morning.. I get bored when I start work late.. Kills the whole day..

These were taken using my sisters 55-200 F4-5.6 DC Sigma lens (with UV filter, just in case you're wondering..)

Some flowers on our fence

[attachmentid=473808]

[attachmentid=473810]

A man-lady beetle, Sure it's a little out of focus but it was windy and dark >: (

[attachmentid=473811]

And this, I just want to say.. GOD I HATE SPIDERS.. Sure they serve a purpose and everything but can't they be like crack dealers and do it in dark alleys, dodgey night-clubs and preschools?

Some nice shots. That's the kind of thing I would like to do if i had the time.

I have no criticism... they're all nice in my book. thumbsup.gif

Well today I went and got my birthday present.

Sigma 70-300mm 4-5.6 (with macro).

I have my very own 'big trouble in little-bigma.'

After playing with both the APO model and the plain-jane, I felt that the extra $70+ and possible 2 months waiting time were really not worth it. That and they both have either SLD or APO to stop chromatic baddies. All I can say is, it's tight as a nuns bum and heavy as a nun too, this and my K100 total 1KG now so I won't be wielding this nasty thing by hand too much.

This is it vs a 55-200 I have been borrowing off my sister, if only they were comparable in size and weight..

[attachmentid=476271]

The hood just makes it look OTT

[attachmentid=476270]

There was also a Pentax 70-300 there but skimming in at just $100 I felt that I would be taking it back in a week to get the Sigma anyway. Now all that's left is to grab a nice 18-55 f2.8 or similar and a K20D and I'm set wink.gif
Nick_
Here's some macro shits, a little bit wobbly whilst using the flash but such a zoom with only f5.6 makes for an insanely short DOF.

Close up for a network card that's sitting around.

[attachmentid=476274]

100% crop of same pic

[attachmentid=476275]

Here's some lumbering around I did today..

Spent a little time being an airplane geek

[attachmentid=477049]

[attachmentid=477051]

[attachmentid=477052]

Last night I decided to snap the moon. The zoom isn't massive by any means but it's still better than my eyes.

[attachmentid=477053]

And another of the damned cat, who wouldn't shut up today.

[attachmentid=477054]

Well after not being able to attend the Archerfield drifto in a while, I managed to scrape in a couple of minutes this arvo, and seeing as I have Friday off, I intend to get some more time in then.

Still cannot break the habit of shooting in the lowest ISO so post-processing gets things a little noisey but meh, I'm doing it for the enjoyment not trying to be pro.

There was a crazy-loud mid-90's commo there tearing it up, fantastic amounts of torque really helped it slide with easy. I also loved the aus delivered sprinter giving it a go, if I could've shaken his hand I would've. It took balls to get out there and give it a go against those who obviously have had more than PS2 experience.

[attachmentid=478080]

[attachmentid=478079]

[attachmentid=478078]

[attachmentid=478081]

Saw this guy at the servo when I raced back to get $5 for the entree fee and thought it'd look pretty hot on the track and, well.. it does!

[attachmentid=478084]

The false rear window in this R32 was pretty cool, giving off a rainbow colouring for some reason..

[attachmentid=478085]

[attachmentid=478087]

[attachmentid=478088]
Nick_
I am thinking of bringing my hot-shoe flash on Friday night but am a little concerned that it'll piss people/drivers off.

Thoughts? I'm thinking the on-camera flash is a safer option if I need (read: have any space left) by the time it gets too dark, I'm keen on getting there right when it opens, perhaps even a little early seeing as this is the first time I will actually be able to PLAN to get there, not go 'oh gee it's 3:30, maybe I'll give it a shot' when I'm at Morayfield/Jimboomba/Where-ever.
Kyl3
Flash bothering drivers? biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

How do you think a TF driver feels, 40+ flashes all in the space of a second or less hahaha

Take it, use it. Results will be interesting/odd..but that's cool!
Nick_
Well the track is only the size 1 or 1/2 swimming pools so my flash should reach a lot of the track but being a competition day I was just concerned about putting drivers off seeing as it's by no means a full fledged National event with pro photographers there etc so I wouldn't think the drivers would be aware and may just jump the tyres and take me out in a fit of mutilated anger..
Twist
I personally think you need to take a bit more time with your flower shots as I can see some great photos come out of them had you taken a little more time.
Nick_
Well I was bored today, I had a chop at HDR but with tree's in the frame giving it a blur and only taking 3 photos with 2 stop increments it looked rather shithouse.

Here are some macro shots and a shot of my mum and dads Shar pei-cross-mastiff being fed something that's probably bad news for dogs. Oh and a shot of the clouds I like smile.gif

[attachmentid=480268]

[attachmentid=480272]

[attachmentid=480270]

[attachmentid=480271]

And this is about as close as I'll probably ever get to owning (IMHO) what is Rays greatest wheel.

[attachmentid=480273]
Nick_
Well it's the first time in a while when I've had the time and have been prepared to hit Archerfield with the camera, I even got a polarizer for my 70-300 today but I think this track is just a little too small for that lens, most of these are taken with my 18-125 (which is also a bit faster at 3.5) and it was too overcast to use the polarizer anyway. Dang, looks like it'll have to wait for DA on Saturday. Only a few turned out, out of 160+, ain't that always the way!

Also got hit up for a possible band photography session, sounds interesting as I'm yet to try it but ironically I've been thinking about it lately. I've also seen a little soft-box for hot-shoe flashes on fleabay too, this might merge the two nicely.. We'll see.
Lance
IMO get the flash off shoe if your shoting people, much better effect, even without a softbox smile.gif
Nick_
Yeah I'm really holding back on getting any acc as I plan (read: dream) on copying Llew with a 40D at xmas time. that 6.5FPS would be REALLY handy.

I was thinking of bouncing the flash, if i have to use it at all, as I do not have a handle for off-shoe, reckon it's worth it?

The guy who came up to me said he's approached a few people so I'd assume someone would have to defiantly be more pro then me and have the right accessories so I might just say 'thanks but no thanks'.. but I'll see when, where etc..
Lance
Try it? never know, they might like the outcome... And you know where you have to improve latter, its not like its a major commissioned based shoot
TD 06
i agree with Lance 100% about off camera flash, its my life *sigh* lol

shooting bands n shit is difficult sometimes, bouncing is good, extremely good sometimes, but most of the time you will need a sharp, fast aperture lens i.e 2.8, good one is 50mm f1.8. if you were gunna get into band stuff, you need image stabilizer and constant aperture fast lenses. and a good body to handle a high iso.

be careful with your ebay stuff, with mini softboxes sometimes they are nothing more than a simple diffuser, but they are made out to be almighty.

for quickie single person portrait stuff get a light stand, white shoot through umbrella and your set.

if your thinking of using it for the band stuff while they are performing, forget it imo get a off shoe cord so you can hold camera in one hand and flash in other.

sorry for the overload i feel excited i dont know why, lol a weird night haha

if you want help with flash shit pm me

Yeah I was thinking about my lenses being way too slow for dark stuff, it's evident in the way I think about taking photos (aka after 5 i don't bother) whereas with a faster lens I could get more time, but I'll wait until I get a Cannon because the way I see it, the more money I spend on the Pentax now, the more money I'm loosing on it. However an off-shoe cord does sound damn handy, even when I've been doing home shots like the beer (and others I haven't let out of the box), it'd give me a lot more freedom so that one I'll be looking into while i wait ANOTHER week for my shutter-release cord to turn up :/ damn hong kong ebay people sending shit via immigrant boats.
TD 06
off shoe cords rock, thats i started off with off shoe flash stuff, mine cost me $80 back in the day, was a absolute ball, until i got bored and myself and Psi of here chopped it up and made it longer, go back through my posts in my thread and you will see biggrin.gif
Kane
I was out at Archy taking photo's a few weeks back, not easy at all. I found the best place was to get them coming around the final hairpin, road's a bit wider and generally your able to get them in full frame without any of the tyre barriers getting in the way of the photo. I was like you, took about 80 or so photo's, only 25 came out relatively decent.
matt mead
nick good work on the archy photos... doesnt look very photo taking friendly
Ghetto Panda
Archy is a bitch for photos but when they come out good they rock, your pics from archy are good but i would have shot at around 1/60 or 1/50th the cars are'nt going very fast at all and at 1/100th (the shutter you used) you just don't get that sense of speed they still seem pretty frozen.

Oh yeah and a 50mm 1.8 lense for archy rocks indeed.
Nick_
I did try 1/50th and 1\60th but they were crazy blurry. I think having a quicker lens would help a lot but since I've now got my sights set on a 40D I wont be spending any big bucks any time soon. a 50mm 1.8 will definantly be on the list then however. As will not missing shots because the K100 is .5FPS ..
matt mead
Nick i would keep shooting above the 1/100 mark... to build up ur confidence with panning...idealy you want to be shooting slower... but u need to build up the skills.. i dont let myself go under 1/100 unless i get bored...u dont get that amazing shoot...but it builds up ur success rate smile.gif...i want a 40d.. its like its made for motorsport photography

I've been buying some pom DSLR mags lately and one has a big review of everything (practically) on the market under 3K and there's a Nikon which shoots 8FPS for 100 frames, it's a pro model and costs more than the 40D but that would be awesome, what wouldn't be awesome is it's 4MP sensor..

Had a play with a 40D last night and DANG it's big, it's like twice the size of my K100 but it's funny that it felt more balanced with it's 17-85 (the kit I'm aiming for) and probably just as heavy. Bentleys Camera House at Chermside can do it for $2200 (a touch under but I can't remember), does anyone have a 'friend' or 'contact' in a camera store that could give me a nice price on a 40D
matt mead
have a look here

http://www.d-d-photographics.com.au/canon40d.htm

very cheap stuff and there in sydney... i buy stuff of them when i cant be bothered waiting for stuff from the us..

Or here is another link with the camera and lense you were after.

If you don't mind travelling down from Brisbane, there is a company called CamerasDirect which is in Labrador, on Brisbane road... They do things REALLY cheap... You can also get the camera mailed to you if thats a problem... here is the link to their 40D section inclu. prices on their website:

https://www.camerasdirect.com.au/index.php/.../canon/40d.html

You can always say to them, oh but 'so and so' has it for $how ever much and they will lower the price for you...
And also try the line, is that your best price smile.gif

All the best with the buy mate, cant wait to see the results from the camera!

A good place is Ted's Camera Store in the City on Adelaide Street. Awesome store and he'll beat any price that Photo Continental are advertising, but then again they've always been a bit heavy on the coin. I got my 11-18mm there and very friendly.

His 40D Zoom kit with the EFS 18-55mm (just your basic kit lens) IS is $1700
Nick_
Wow guys, those are killer prices!

I hope that I can save quick because I've got the taste of it now..

In all reality I think if this ever happens it'll be late in the year unfortunately.
Nick_
Well who else went to QR today? I bet a few, I know JustDave was there, lulling up and down in front of me in the first DA prac.. I was wishing no-one else was around so I could've knocked him down with something from my car and taken off with his elephant-dick sized L series tele-lens on a rather gigantic canon (5D? 1D?) but alas, I went home instead and went to crushers leagues club which was awful.

Here are the keepers, even some of these are ratty, but hell, I'll put them up anyway. Oh and I like how Fernando hit the tyres, DON'T THINK YOU'RE SO GOOD WITH YOUR CHROME VINYL NOW DO YA BUDDY? HUH??
