ok im pretty new to drifting and jap cars looking into a s13 silvia right now it has no motor or gears box but has a rear lsd and thats bout it.
im considering my option either get an sr20 front cut as i need front fenders bumper and left inner guard so this way i would get the panels and motor all in one, my worry is can u get good hp (300kw) from an sr20? im planning on going forged internal etc but can the little 4 cyl handle the power?
other option is chase panels and then get a rb25det and gear box. i know this will make the power but will cost more probably a grand maybe more.
opinions? im in qld and wanna do as much of this as possible.
cheers
RetardedMonkey
SR20 will easily do 300rwkw with forged internals.

RB25 will cost a lot more because you need a lot of different parts to make it fit into a car that probably came standard with an SR.
leumas
An SR20 will make a streetable 300kw with forged internals as reliably as you like. Get cams, a turbo, ECU, fuel pump, injectors etc first and worry about your bottom end stuff once/if it craps out
20VGT
If i understand this correctly......you are new to drift (eg: suck at it), and are new to Jap cars, yet you want to do a conversion on a vehicle you are not at all familiar with.

And feel you need 300kw to LEARN how to drift. :s

Ignore the power figures for the moment, set the car up with suspension etc, then get on the track and learn how to drift. Then, when it is the power level that is holding you back from becoming a DA champion, you should consider chasing 300kw.

LordNafe
I agree, why the hell do you want 300kw to learn in? That's stupid.... ALot of Drift Australia cars don't even have that....
I'd personally go the rb25... internally stock one with a fairly small, low mount bolt on turbo kit will make a reliable 250rwkw, which is still alot more than you'll need.
TwinCam16
have you ever driven a s13 with an rb.
GreekWarrior
1000hp 2jz engine, perfect to learn how to drift
EFO
Buy an s13 with 300kw already......

That makes things easier.

exactly, they are two very different engines.
Skyline_Deano
the sr20 will make 300kw easy but just get the engine and box etc in the car n leave it as is while u learn to drift then after u got some experience put some $$$ into the engine for more power.....
TUF120
They have bolt in kits on ebay for RB into nissan. Whats another kid with too much hp in a car gonna do ?? Die ??

RB for life

ok im pretty new to drifting and jap cars

yes, that is clearly apparent

you dont need 300KW for drift. your expectations are in the wrong order. for drift, power is the last thing you worry about. chasis and suspension components are what i would be looking at first.

more importantly do you actually know how to drift? get out there in any rwd shitter with a locked diff and working handbrake and get the basic know-how first.
cyo00
really. 200kw is plenty of power to drift on mate, that's easily enough!! As said above, the standard suspension and swaybars will not cut it. Get some coilovers, front a rear sway bars, strut brace and get going with that. Think about the big power figures later when you can control the power you have now.
ausjd2703
ok kool i probably didnt make it clear
im not starting out with 300kw r u insane tongue.gif
my intentions are to end up in a few years with a 300kw car. after ive done full suspension mod roll cage and body stiffening.
this is purely a track car as some one said bout a young person killing themselves.
all i wanted to know is if i stick with the sr20 will it see me through to what i eventually want. which by the sounds is yes.
ive driven in a 180sx with rb25 and its insane so a silvia would be similar i expect.
cheers guys

If you're talking o me, yes I have.
I also have a car i my garage with an sr20 and one with an rb25, and I would pick the rb25 anyday
Special Ed
bolt in kits from ebay lol!
bop001
speaking in a purely technical sense... wouldnt it be cheaper/lighter and more responsive to stick with a sr? just keep the revs in the mid range

i have a rb, thing is fkn front heavy. if u dont prepare for the corner prepare for massive understeer
johnnyc85
stick with the sr its cheaper a bit lighter and will make the car a shit load easier to handle with all the less weight in the front , keeps the cars weight transfer more symetrical

forget the ebay chinese shit people
shawn_26
you dont need 300kw to have a SHITLOAD of tyre smoking fun in an s13. i had 230atw from my SR and id smoke 1st 2nd 3rd and 4th with a bit of entry speed extremely EASILY.
i_s2_nismo
RB engines suck.... go for a 1 or 2JZ..... rumor is that RB engines in silvias are gay with things like balance issues... also the fact that RB engines have oil pressure issues... just spend on the SR20DET.... SR20's are AWESOME engines.... but if you really want an engine conversion 1 or 2JZ FTW!!! but your only going to make a car harder to drive with an engine conversion...

i completely agree with the above comment. thought out brilliantly

yes an RB25 is a brilliant engine but it doesn't belong in a silvia.... no engine but a SR20 or a CA18 belongs in a silvia.... it is nice to see engine conversions but you can get nice figures by modding the motor that comes with the car rather then spending good money on an engine which isn't suited for the car

it wont cost much unlike what everyone is saying to put a RB25 in the silvia

I would recommend you get a car with an engine and gear box but it is up to you

you are dreaming if you think you will do much of the work yourself - unless you plan on building it for the next 10 years. If so then piss that off and get a AE86 Sprinter nice and cheap and away you go

Im not sure how many people on here have driven a 300kw silvia - but it certainly isn't a STREETABLE car, yes you could drive it on the street but you wouldn't want to every day, due to the clutch and turbo that would be required not to mention the maintaince costs

You are looking at some serious money mate to get that thing rolling either way a 300kw Sr20 will set you back close to 10k that is a Tomei or HKS build 2.0 - 2.2l along with original engine cost

then you have tuning, suspension, tyres and all the other bolt on modifications you will need to get it sliding well

IMO from where you are now, if you have the choice go the RB25 as it will make 300kw MUCH easier than the SR20 and will cost you about the same to put it in - there isn't much custom work needed

but dude if you are new to drifting just get yourself a sprinter or a S13 with an engine get out there and have some fun - you dont have to be the best, it more important that you are out there actually doing it than at home working on the car
inj16v
HKS stroker kit - 2.2 lt $6,800 by memory! HKS cams $400 roughly, solid lifters $1100 ect! My sr has recieved the works and top end power and torque will match it with the best! Including labour and parts remove and refit my SR owes me $13,278.00 and you get one hell of a engine! Just do some research on both and see which will give you your best bang for buck! But either way you should be happy with either one you choose! So over all id find it hard to choose but id choose an SR20 over the RB from personal experiences! thumbsup.gif

from wat ive seen at my local drift track power isnt really the biggest issue yeah u need some power but too much isnt alwasya good thing get ur suspension and steering sorted out and ur half way there then add alot of practice and ur laughing as for which engine go the sr because of the weight issuse mentioned b4

what, compared to an RB? lol
spunkrat
Im going to say RB25, if your end goal is 300rwkw. Simply because as previously stated 300rwkw from a SR is a bit of a pig for a street driven car. No matter what you do to it there is no way that a 2litre 4 cylinder engine can match a 2.5litre 6 cylinder engine for torque and ability to spool up a larger turbo.

And the RB25 conversion isnt expensive. and yes it does make it a bit more front heavy, but stiffen up the front suspension abit, and play around with swaybars and wheel alignment settings and it will still be easy enough to learn in.

A stock RB25 will have more than enough power in a S13 for you to learn in, and if you get a good condition RB20 gearbox you wont need to modify tailshaft or anyhting either. And good condition RB20 box, if treated right, will be fine behind stock RB25.

Just for the record my Silvia has RB25 and I will have it back in my hands soon so can let you know first hand how it goes.
TUFF VZ
sr will sound better on limiter
spunkrat
LOL SR sounds shit. Period lol.
Manic 180
i looked at an rb25 conversion. i got scared off from the guys who have done it saying it was a hand full to keep from under steering.
Granthem
RB limiter love.

However i laughed at the V8 and weight comment. Gen III < RB in weight
tango
i've said it before and i'll say it again drop a 1uz in it.
reliability is what you need for drifting and the 1uz is the most reliable engine going around.
spunkrat
Yeh, alloy V8s like the VH45 weigh less than RB. Even the big Gen 3 weighs less haha. But if you are serious about RB in S13, you take it out and practice and change your driving style to suit and you will be fine.

haha yeah i remember having to look it up and the Ls2 was 450lbs fully dressed, compared to the RB's 720lbs lol

<3 the 1uz. anyone willing to help me stick one in an E30..

i drift in a stocko 2.6L 4 cylinder RODEO u dont need power just stiff suspension and a locked diff or a really good lsd

I completely agree - the rb25 is a decent bit better.

People going on about balance issues, it's all just internet myth. I've driven plenty of sr and rb silvias, and if anything the rb motor being slightly heavier and slightly more forward than the sr is BENEFICIAL to the s13s handling. The front end geometry in the s13 is actually not so great.

Even if it did make a difference to the balance, I bet 95% of this forum wouldn't be able to make more use of one over the other.

Basically, you're worrying about trivial things. Go buy a ke70 or an r31, lock the diff, put some coilovers in it and some fat little 14s or 15s and learn how to the drift on the track.

Power does not = drift. Skill and suspension/chassis setup = drift.

LOL!!! Why should I go back to school for putting my opinion forward on a public internet forum? Obviously I have heard both motors, on limiter and I personally think that SR20's sound like shit, especially when compared to RB25. Any RB really. Its a personal thing.

And judging by your grammar and poor sentence structure, perhaps you should go back to school?
decoyslikecurves
Rbs are DEFINITELY better sounding motors than srs
