Full Version: How To Make Your Computer Turn On Faster

This is entirely from memory, so don't get shitty if I get something wrong.

Hate having to wait for all those little icons next to the clock to load when you turn on your computer? Well, here's a quick and easy way to speed this process up.

1. Press Start
2. Point to Run
3. type: msconfig
4. Click "Services" tab
5. Click "Hide all microsoft services"
6. Uncheck all the boxes.
7. Click "Start Up" tab
8. You should be able to disable most of these, if you're fairly clueless, only disable the ones that annoy you, such as google task bar, or Msn for example.
9. Click OK
10. Reboot computer.
11. Log back in, then check the "Do not run at startup" box, then press OK
12. PROFIT!

anyone tried this and can confirm it works ?
Stuit
it will work. when you restart for the first time itll say youre using a custom startup and do you want to revert back, just tick the 'dont show this message again' and no you dont want to revert and youre away.

imho its a waste of time to do this, If you stop all services running from the start up when you actually want to run the program its going to need to start the service.

Then you will winge saying 'oh my pc is so slow when i open word it takes ages for the 1st time!'

Try out this software called 'BootVis' meant to be much better then the good ol msconfig.

Well now think about it. You don't use all the services every time you use your computer, and it doesn't take long for them to load individually so its a good idea. You can also cache the kernel into your ram.

You fail.

When a computer turns on, after it's past BIOS, it goes to the windows xp bar load thing. What the computer is doing at this point in time, is loading the entire operating system into the back of your RAM. When it finishes doing this, you log on, then it goes and finds the start up instructions, and it sees all these services so it loads all those. That's why it takes a while for the task bar to fully load when you load up your computer.

Word does not use a pre loader, like iTunes does. Word will be slow because it's loading it to Ram, the faster your hdd and ram are, the faster the transfer between hdd and ram is. If you haven't got much ram, the computer has to figure out how to squeeze the new program in, so it will load it to the page file, which is like a "backup" ram on the hard drive, this is a terrible way of running your system. An ideal computer is the one that will not need a page file and will be able to handle everything you throw at it, solely on the ram.

Best to do

MSCONFIG as explained above

then

disk clean up
start > all programs > accessoires > system tools > disk clean up

then do a disk defragment
start > all programs > accessories > system tools, disk defragmenter

also you can change the page file.

and also you can

change performance options.

CCleaner + Defraggler + properly setting up page file = epic win.

There are few things you can definitely turn off in MSCONFIG services, such as Help and Services, Security Centre, UPS, Error Reporting Service.

But getting turning off some unnecessary startup programs will be more beneficial - MSN Messenger (msmsgs), Quicktime Task (QTtask), Java Schedule (Jusched), Realplayer things (real....)

Also, other things you can do is increase the Virtual memory size (by default this is set with a min value and max value, for best performance, pick a set value of 1.5x your RAM amount.

Run virus and spyware scans regularily and defrag your hdd once a month at least...

Also don't fill up the main drive (drive with Windows and Program Files) up too much.

If all else fails, maybe time to overclock or upgrade?
