Full Version: Buying My First Dslr

I'm about to purchase my first digital SLR and was wondering which camera people recommended and why? Obviously I am only interested at the entry level cameras and alot of the photos I will be taking will be at Automotive events, including car shows and drags, etc.

I am only interested in new cameras not older second hand models. After going down to Ted's Camera House today and discussing my needs with them, I think I am leaning towards a Pentax K100d Super. I think for the price it seems to be excellent value. Does anyone have any opinions on this camera?

Thanx and look forward to hearing what you guys reckon. smile.gif

The question here is, do you really need to spend that money for a DSLR? Maybe a Semi-SLR or P&S even could achieve what you're after.

go to digital camera warehouse (type it in google)

I've just spent a month researching slr cameras ended up with a canon 400D though at first i was looking at a K100D Super

K100D super produces some clear pictures so long as ur not interested in printing more than a4 size

Great for a starter kit
Image stabilizer built into the camera soooo many lenses to choose from practically and pentax lense even from the old k1000 35mm film slrs will work which means u can get lenses for $40 and have the stabilizer function.

Sensor cleaning feature where every time u turn on the camera it shakes the sensor to remove dust

also have a look at the Nikon D40

if you can stretch teh budget the Nikon D40X is 10mp and it less than 1k

Thanx MrDoof for the reply.

I'm still unsure of which I'll buy. I have been reading a heap of reviews on alot of DSLR's and I think it just confuses things even more! Haha

. . . . but I've been thinking that for the same money as the 400d I can buy the Pentax K10D which I reckon will give me alot more scope with what I'll be able to do with it and save me upgrading after 12 months or so.

I'd be pretty interested in knowing what DSLR's everyone on here uses. I'm betting most use a 400d or the likes but I'm more interested in what set ups the more professional guys on here use?

I use a Nikon D200 but for you if you wanna get a DLSR i would say a Canon 400D heap of lenses, accessories and the such and probably be more than you will ever need if you get better just upgrade lenses. Nikon is great don't get me wrong thats why i use one but at the end of the day Canon has better noise control and much more lense choices Nikon you pretty much don't have much too choose from also the Nikon D40 some lenses won't autofocus which is kinda gay.
Just look at Chris F's photo's he does'nt have kit lenses but it's still only a 400D it's all about technique my D200 is probably too much for me and i should have just bought better lenses and improve my technique but meh what you gonna do lol. Anyway sorry bout the long winded post but yeah hopefully that makes sense.

ps. when you get real good upgrade to Nikon stuff it's da shit lol.
