Well the response in the paper has been rather good, only few negative people with the single mentality that all car enthusiasts are hoons.
Hoons dominate SMS messages

Its a shame that these young guys get labelled hoons no matter what they do. There is a difference between a hoon and a car enthusiast. One is an offense (and offensive), the other is a hobby. Tim

Bein one of the 'hoons with hearts of gold' i was unhappy bein labeled a hoon. We try to break the label barrier by being responsible. Zac, virginia. Its fantastic to see true car enthusiasts coming together for a great cause, its just a shame they had to be labeled hoons and their wonderful story being related to the tragedy that was caused by true hoons, a label the people in the charity cruise do not deserve. Fantastic work to the group of kind hearted car enthusiasts. Bravo. Alex, Alawa.Turbo stuart park. My thoughts exactly mate. 2 many car enthusiasts get lumped in with the idiots. Dave tiwi
How is it that everyone that drives a car is a hoon?
So is the editor goin to preach for financial penalties for ALL crimes to be in proportion to what he is advocating for so called hoons? I doubt it! There is no concept of proportional justice in aus!

hoon
Austral./NZ informal
• noun a lout.
• verb behave like a lout.
and according to Wikiepedia - The term "Hoon" was first used in Australia at the turn of the 20th century where it referred to a man living off immoral earnings [1] (i.e. a pimp). The origin of its current usage is currently unknown but is widely believed to be a shortened form of "hooligan" [2]. In more recent times it has been used to describe any young male or female who drives in a manner which is anti-social towards the standards of modern day society. Generally, a hoon is any person who drives any vehicle dangerously and/or fast.
Would reporting facts irreponsibly or in a manner that offendes responsible car owners and enthusiasts constitute the phrase 'journalistic Hoons' perhaps........? Na, dont go there hehehhehe just being mischievous.
Guys, its a battle we cant win...catchy or frivilous headlines are used to get public attention so they buy papers. Its something we gotta live with I am afraid. By knee jerking with responses you simply continue to fuel the fire of public debate and help sell papers.

Call For Open Days To Curb Hooning
By Matt Cunningham
BETTER access to motorsport tracks would keeo hoons off Darwin's streets, a Top End motoring group says.
Top End Drift Association president Jeff Dunkel said motoring enthusiasts had nowhere to show off their cars and their driving skills, forcing many to resort to illegal street hooning.
"I think hoons are getting a bit of a bad rap," he said.
"I know sometimes we muck up on the street but it's really because we don't have a facility."
Mr Dunkel (pictured) said Hidden Valley raceway should be open to the public more often.
He said organising race meeting held at the track were often too costly for the average punter.
"It seems to be a lot easier and cheaper to cop an infringement for doing something silly on the street than to have to pay to go in a raceday," Mr Dunkel said.
Sport and Recreation Minister Kon Vatskalis said the Government supported motor sport.
"The NT Government loves motor sports," he said.
"We have recently upgraded Hidden Valley, the Speedway and the Karts facilities."
"We support various motorsport events including the V8's, PowerCruise, Crusty Demons and the drags."

Oct 3 2007, 11:05 AM
that is true. but its been mentioned so many times that until the track GETS more support from us and other enthusiasts, we wont get more support from open days at the track.
it is expensive to run, which is why the track days are expensive. although i think its definitely more costly doing it on the street now with the higher fines and the demerit points.

Why is it that the govt always looks at the big picture??
Is it because they are a money hungry bunch of mofo's, and unless it's a big event, and they dont get money or recognition for, they're not interested??
Maybe they should have a look in their backyards for a change, and start fixing some problems instead of whinging about them. On a smaller scale that is.

Did it for the right reasons? You mean whinging that Hidden Valley is too expensive? Perhaps if he used the correct figures of <$90 rather than the $150 quoted, which of course becomes exponentially cheaper when you go to the track more than once and purchase year insurance and membership. And of course, seeing as this champion has stated that it happens 'every night of the week' sometimes, he should have no problem getting down to hidden valley once a month, which as I have already outlined, makes it much, much cheaper.
To his credit he didn't completely shoot the collective car community in the foot, but gawd dammit, feeding the sensationalist crap of the NT News like this is not what we need.

Well there was a thing on the news today about quite a few I think fatal crashes on the weekend in VIC.
They showed quite a few, saying how people had died, but only once did they mention age, and that was when 3 people were involved in a crash that we aged under 22.
There was a lot more crashes but the ages weren't even mentioned.
So yet again the press making big story about when people under a certain age have an accident and perish or just have an accident, unlike the large amount of people over that age, but don't get much of a mention.

People in other country's have over 100000 people die each year on the roads

Im the Idiot who the article was written about, i now realise what a stupid mistake it was, i was a bit drunk at the time i wrote her the email but that aint an excuse, as usual the reporter went and mixed around everything i said anyway, i didnt tell her how many time a week we go out in numbers all i said is that we go out whenever we feel like it, and i wasnt saying that hidden valley is too expensive, i was just stating that it only happens once a month and the price was added in by the reporter. I used to race at the track in clubsport 16 and 1 day hope 2 have a race car of my own, that video of the xf wasnt me driving, and i think the government should concentrate more on drink driving and the more serious matters rather then picking on the easy targets such as hoons and taking away the open speed limits.. i know im gonna get the shit ripped outta me but thats fine, i wanna hear what you's all have 2 say about what i've done...
