If your not going to be using on a regular basis, just go and buy a 7.1 mp point and shoot from JB or the like. No point forking out 1k+ on a camera and not using it.
Some of the little cameras are pretty fuggin good. Do your homework before you buy.

Have you got like a rough price range you are looking at? do you want an dlsr or is a hybrid kinda slr camera like Harry is talking about so you don't have to worry about changing lenses more what your after?
I think there's a few things you need to ask yourself then that will help people answer your question. If your grandmother is a pro with a Canon then buy something like a 350D if you can stretch it (not knowing how much you wanna spend) then go for a 400d and then just burrow lenses off her, if she is keen to lend em' to you.

depends what the camera is.
for taking general pictures would i need to change the lens or would i be able to use the standard one.
http://www.boostcruising.com/forums/index....=222963&hl=that one seems pretty good. im selling off a few things i dont need so hopefully that would be able to fund most of it.

What would the pros and cons be of getting a hybrid slr as opposed a dslr?
would the lense of a hybrid slr be good enough for general photography and some close ups?
mainly the camera will be used for photographing cars and landscape but will have some use at bdays ect

mmmm, where there is a shitload of hybrid slr's then, i think the term your looking for is SLR Like or Semi SLR
basicly the only SLR'ish thing about them is that you can chnage aperture shutter and shit

I have a P&S, SLR-Like and a dSLR. They all can't be compared with each other, the P&S 6.0mp camera is just for small occasions when I go out and such and don't exactly have room to carry my whole camera bag with my dSLR and lenses.
I think in your interest the SLR-Like/Semi-SLR is fine, don't have to worry about changing lenses and all yet you can still have control of the lens aperture etc.
The question is how much are you willing to spend? If you have the money just go out and buy the Canon 400d, I have one and I love it otherwise you can just stick with a SLR-Like such as a Canon Powershot S1/S3. I have the S3 it's pretty neat, sort of small and takes quite nice shots.

i have been offered a 300D with 18-55mm lens kit for $500
does that sound a bit steep in pricing?
if i can find a dslr then it would be great but if not i may just have to settle for a slr-like camera

g'day mate... i've got a Fuji S6500fd....(do a search on the specs)... its a DSLR "like" camera.
I bought mine OS but i think they retail for $500ish here.... its pretty good compromise between compact p/s and full DSLR....i think its 28-300mm zoom, and has adjustable aperature & shutter controls, can shoot in RAW, plus "live view" and video....it takes good pics for what it is. PM me if you want to know any more......
cheers, Alex.

I'd buy that as a beginners camera. Just buy a telephoto (sigma 75-300) for $200 if you feel you want to take it further or if you want a zoom. It is a decent camera, as long as you arent doing any low light work, they have extremely bad ISO noise control!

Balls. Don't get anything other than Nikon or Canon, it will drive you nuts getting accessories like lenses, flashes etc. 2nd hand or even new!
