I have the same lense and have used it for drift shot it's a pretty sharp lense for what it is not the greatest but it goes alright, it's a good walk around lense i would invest in a 70-200mm VR ( oh yeah this lense is crazy expensive) just check out Moment's thread to see this bad boy of a lense in action or maybe a 70-300mm VR like i have i love it and is way cheaper than the 200 still not cheap though around $1000.

Yeh, that is the main killer, the cost of lenses.
But they make it worh while in the end.

As has already been said. Practice Practice Practice.
Learn how to use your camera in every mode, read the manual and read all the guides you can. dslrusers.com is a good Nikon dominated site if you want help and guides.
You can also ask me if you need to know anything about the camera - I do have one

That lens is pretty decent but you will definately need some new glass soon. I would recommend a 70-300 VR like what Ghetto has.

Shoot in RAW and learn how to do RAW editing, that's when the D80 will really start to shine.
Also don't get caught in the trap of believing that if it was taken with a DSLR is is a good photo, you have to put in as much, if not more effort when shooting with a DSLR to get good shots.
Keep at it

Same as how I started with my Canon 350D, shooting in highest qual Jpeg and the auto modes, I was impressed with myself, then discovered RAW + aperture priority + shutter priority + manual Modes after reading quiet a few books and online guides, and was completely blown away at how crap the standard shots look in comparison, RAW is the only way to do it now!.
D80 is a great Camera

With Canon cameras it is put down to 3 groups. This is how it was told by all the photographers off the Canon forum.
1, amatuer. Any camera that has 3 numbers. e.g (400, 350)
2, semi - pro. Any camera that has 2 numbers. e.g (10, 20, 30)
3, Pro. Any camera that has 1 number. e.g (1, 5)

I picked up the same camera. Bought it body only and then just grabbed a secon hand 18-55 lens to start with until I decide what to get next. Want the 18-200 VR. Reckon that will cover everything I want to do.
Here is a snap or 2. Me = beginner. Not shooting in RAW yet.

Me = beginner. Not shooting in RAW yet.
Shooting in RAW has nothing to do with being a beginner. The only downside is the larger file size. The D80 will do a RAW + JPEG. JPEG is just the camera's version of the photo compressed and slightly post processed (depending on size). RAW is fairly uncompressed data from the sensor. As you already know, it's more desireable for editing than jpeg. You can keep your raw photos and always come back to them on a rainy day down the track when your uber PS skills can sometimes make that 'throw away' shot a keeper.
