The Rejex Rally is on Picnic Day weekend - 4 & 5 August. We leave Darwin at about 10am on Saturday morning - not sure where from, but probably from Mindil Beach because that's worked so well the last two years. We drive down to Hayes Creek or Douglas Daly on the Saturday, stopping at various WWII airstrips and doing motorkhanas. On the Sunday we use an airstrip just north of Hayes Creek before lunch, then another one just to the south, before driving onwards to Katherine (only goes to Katherine every second year, this year being a Katherine year).
For those that want to know, here are some factoids about the Rejex Rally:
1. The first Rejex Rally was held in 1955.
2. It is called the 'Rejex Rally' because the organisers of the famous Redex Trials decided they weren't coming to Darwin in 1955, so the Darwin people feeling rejected created their own rally instead, hence Rejex Rally.
3. The event was only run once or twice originally.
4. In 1995, a group of car fanatics decided to re-run the Rejex Rally to celebrate 40 years since the original event. Leo Izod, one of these fanatics, went on the original rally (with his father I think), and still had the car he went in - this vehicle has always run with the number '1' in the rally to commemorate this.
5. The re-running was so popular and fun that it has been done every year since, so 2007 will be the 42nd anniversary of the original, and the 12th event in a row. Not sure if it's the 13th or 14th event in total.
6. The record for most Rejex Rallies won in a row is held by Gary Pendlebury. Gary won the event in 2001 in a Mini, and in 2002, 2003 & 2004 in a VT HSV Clubsport. His wife Caroline won the 2000 event. Gary & Caroline also came second in 2005, but had car issues in 2006 preventing them from getting another excellent result.
7. The Rejex Rally has grown SIGNIFICANTLY in the last five-six years. In 2001 there were just under twenty vehicles entered in the event - in 2006 there were fifty!
8. There are two main competitions in the Rejex Rally: outright & handicap. The outright trophy is for whoever has the best average result over the whole event. 1st, 2nd & 3rd trophies are given for the persons with the best result out of the whole field, and 1st, 2nd & 3rd are given for class categories (based on year of vehicle production). The handicap trophy is based on a combination of outright result and a handicap based on the year of vehicle production and can include what modifications have been done to the vehicle.
9. There are many different trophy available in the Rejex Rally, not only based on results. These include best presented car, best female team, and others.
10. Any and all cars are welcome to enter, and the greater the diversity of vehicles, the better. Past entries have included 1920's Fords & Dodges, Skyline GT-R's, Minis, Commodores, Falcons, Mustangs, and custom built vehicles such as a Clubman and a 1930's Ford hotrod. More recent years have seen some amazing machinery entered, including such exotics as a Lotus Exige, Lamborghin Countach, and even a Toyota Starlet!!! (I had to throw it in somewhere
