HI guys.
Been rinding my 01 GSXR600 every day for about 9 weeks now.
I am a bees dick under 6ft and weight about87-90kg(fit) depending on dinner and if ive bene to the crapper

Im having serious issues with comfort, ive tried adjusting my riding by gripping with the thighs more and taking the wieght of my wrists. I have also been going to the gym again and ive been training my lower back and abs to help relieve the pain when riding.
All this does not seem to be helping.
10 mins into any ride especially if its mostly straights and my lower back kills! i can put up with the wrist pain and take one hand off now and then. But the lower back pain becomes unbearable. It seems my top half is a bit cramp and i have to curve/arch my back in the current riding position
Its so bad i am thinking of selling the gixxer.
It would be great to get opinions on what u guys think.
I am looking at.
1. Selling gixxer and buying somehting else. I dont have much/any money to add to what i get for sale so i will prob get a crapper or a hornet or something? cant afford a buell

ANY ONE WANNA SWAP

2. Try Heli bars. They cost about $600+ to get installed and may or may not help? any one tried them? Im interested in user experience opinions?
3. Adjustable rearsets? again $500min and may or may not help.
Id like to keep the gixxer but i also dont want to spend $600-$1200 and find out its just as bad and have to sell any way.
What do u guys reckon?
Cheers

I think option 1 is going to best suit you. It is a sports bike though.. Not entirely designed for lots of comfort

I found the pain goes away after a while. I'm 6'4 and had similar probs. I doubt there is going to be much that will change the riding position enough to fix the problem for you. Buy a cruiser. You can lean back then

hmmm.. im no expert when it comes to riding positions (im still trying to master it myself!) but what ive been taught so far is to not arch your back but lean in over the tank and adjust your hands so that the outer ball of your wrist is wresting against the bar ends, also adjust your feet so that the ball of your foot is resting on the peg... this not only feels more natural but gives me better feel and feed back from the bike..... im just under 6ft way 70kg and ride a 2000 model r6, im not saying this will work for you but its worth a try! p.s... this was taught to me at a local track day by a ex aus super bike champion so it does hold some cred!

goodluck!

you only just got your bike, you may just need to adjust to it. took me ages to get over the sore arse and wrists from riding.
in the end the new bike purchase was the storm, simply for the relaxed riding position. its not as lent over, still get a little uncomfortable on longer rides though but its just something you get over.

You brought a sports bike mate there intended for speed not comfort. If you wanted comfort by a tourer if not stop whinging and buy a 'tard

I realise its a sports bike not meant to be comfy but back pain after 15 mins of riding cant be right. I get sore lower back that just gets worse the longer im on it. I can keep the weight of the wrists so thats not that big a issue.
i feel like my top half is too long thats why i curve my back to fit on the thing?
I am going to go down to springwood suzi this weekend and get some one to look at me on it. They have helibars so if they think that will help i might opt for that.
I dont get how some guys where are taller and shorter than me talk about how comfy their sports bike or gsxr is. I can understand a short guy being comfy but any one over 6ft?
Oh VN-COM im lovin ur bike.

its your back not the bike! check where abouts on the seat you are sitting, as in to far back. I find when i sit to far back i get a sore back, i sit against the tank, toes on pegs, and i find roadies super comfy!!! better than dirties IMO. but thats just me!
Try to do some lower back work out sessions, sounds like your back is just gettin really tired, hence the pain. Unlucky, might have to sell up!

I have been doin glower back exercises and dead lifts etc.
At the moment i sit right up against the tank, my seat seems to slope pushing my nads into the tank. Im starting the think if helibars dont helt then maybe a seat reshape. I rode into work today and it was actually fairly comfy.

Thats excatly how i ride my bike and its the most comfortable postion and it means you ony have to ge your ass off the bike for corners rather than picking your toes up and shifting your wait forward..
Getting set up on your bike is th hardest part but once your have the best postion everything else will come.

Pain is Fuel!! Ride through it! (That's what i told myself on a 400km round trip on my RGV) It worked although i had 2 days off the bike to recover

. Back has been peachy ever since, i don't even get tired at trackday

instead of helibars you could get convetibars as they are adjustable which would work for more people. the only thing is they cost more if you need longer throttle and brake lines.

The way you ride is the same as me. Nice and close to the tank. I'd go see a doctor if it's that bad.

Your question has probably already been answered but i reckon option 1 is the best for you, go out and test ride a shit load of different bikes, you are bound to find one that feels comfy... If you cant handle the leaning over of the tank something like 73RRA's would suit you well

if i was to get a naked bike it would be the Z750

Keep the gixxer mate, take fairings off, visit austreetfighters.com, buy stuff and turn the gixxer into a fighter, keep all stock bits for sale time etc.
Can even buy a 2nd hand ducktail and stuff so you have all original bodywork still, works out cheaper then having the hassle of selling and buying

not a bad idea mate, im tossing up fighter bars or helis, fighterbars means more mods required.
How to u find riding with the wide bars 7ERRA?

Jun 19 2007, 06:37 PM

Just one question may seem a bit silly, but you ever thought of stretching your back before you ride?
49rlz
Jun 19 2007, 10:29 PM
OverDose, nah im not about to giv eit away

i might consider swaps if any one is interested.
Draven, yeah thats worth trying, ill stretch my lower back tomorrow before i jump on.
7ERRA why did i not think of cutting down the bars hmm, i might go helis still as fighter bars on a gixer reguire the short screen fitted.
Any one know the optimum average hieght/weight they make these bikes for? i notice lots of sports biek guys tend to be 5'9 or shorter.

they seem to me made for jap sized people
but at your height and weight you shouldnt have a problem
Draven
Jun 20 2007, 01:05 PM
i dont think height has that much to do with it, heaps of my mates are 6ft and taller and ride 600 and 1000cc bikes,

I'm 6"4 and have no probs. The height and weight varies between the guys I ride with aswell.. I'm assuming somewhere around 5"8 - 6"0 and 75kg - 90kg would be close to ideal.

I'll admit I tuned out a lot of the responses here. If you're having persistent back pain from riding then maybe try visiting a physio and asking them about it, they will be able to tell you which muscles are being stressed and how you should go about strengthening those muscles. eg, it may be that the muscles along your vertebrae aren't doing their job well enough and other muscles are having to work to compensate for this, they wont be as efficient so you'll be overworking them.
If the idea of a physio seems a bit pricey, try going to the one at UQ physio school where you can see a final year undergrad or a graduate physio for a pretty cheap price, I have been there before for a sore back and they could pinpoint the bad muscle and how to exercise it in a matter or minutes.

I know a few big - tall - blokes that ride, and they seem to be able to do everything better, or easier atleast, its like the height helps balance the big bastards out!
